Being prepared is key to having an optimal learning environment. Mayor Annise Parker wants all Houstonians to take advantage of this weekend's back-to-school tax-free shopping holiday to help ensure students are ready to learn. From clothing and shoes to school supplies, most products under $100 will not be taxed. Exceptions include anything bought by mail, online or by telephone. Qualifying school supplies (if priced less than $100) Binders Book bags Calculators Cellophane tape Blackboard chalk Compasses Composition books Crayons Erasers Folders; expandable, pocket, plastic and manila Glue, paste and paste sticks Highlighters Index cards Index card boxes Legal pads Lunch boxes Markers (including dry erase markers) Notebooks Paper; loose leaf ruled notebook paper, copy paper, graph paper, tracing paper, manila paper, colored paper, poster board and construction paper Pencil boxes and other school supply boxes Pencil sharpeners Pencils Pens Protractors Rulers Scissors Writing tablets More information may be found on the Texas Comptroller's website, http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, including a full list of qualifying clothing, shoes and other items that will be tax exempt.
