Harvard Food Market At 849 Harvard St.

The 1923 city directory has a Harvard Street Drug store at 9th and Harvard. From the 1943 aerials, there are houses on the SW corner, and Harvard Elementary on the SE corner. That leaves the NW corner, which is the remodeling outfit now, or the NE corner which is a church. I don't know when the church moved there.

That might be the site of this article I read awhile ago. The link doesn't work, but you can see the description.

HIGH WATER DAYS - Houston Lifestyles & Homes magazine

Harvard Market in the Heights became an island during the 1935 flood.

Wondered if it flooded during Allison.

From the 1935 Houston City directory (thanks, ancestry.com subscription!), Harvard Food Market was at 849 Harvard. Harvard Cafe was at 847, next door. This is across the street from the North end of the school, where the townhomes are on the SW corner of Harvard and 9th. From the way the picture is taken, the market seems to have faced 9th Street. I haven't found a Sanborn map for the Heights yet.
