trymahjong
Curbside Recycling Expanded to 35,000 More Households Begins Monday, July 22, 2013The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is expanding the curbside recycling program to an additional 35,000 households. (See list below.) Service will begin Monday, July 22, 2013, for homes on "A" week collection and Monday, July 29, 2013, for homes on "B" week collection.Residents in the neighborhoods included in the expansion will receive one 96-gallon green automated cart starting the first week of July, similar to the black automated garbage cart they currently have. Beginning July 22, 2013, collection of both the green and black carts will occur on the same day as current collection service; however, recyclables are collected every other week. This is the first of two expansions this calendar year where SWMD will double the number of homes with single stream recycling. This is not only good for the environment, but also helps reduce disposal costs, create jobs and appropriately manage resources. The second expansion to another 70,000 households is planned for the fall. The neighborhoods to be included in the second expansion have not yet been identified.Recyclable items that can be placed in the green carts include: newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, cardboard, paperboard, paper bags, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, tin and steel cans and plastics 1 - 5 and 7.Since first implementing the initiative in 2009, residents have overwhelmingly been asking to be included in this program. It is convenient because participants can place their unsorted recyclables, including glass, in one city-provided container with wheels that makes it easy to roll to the curb.Subdivisions included in the July 2013 expansion curbside Automated Recycling Program: 1.
