lockmat
I went to the Main Street TIRZ meeting this evening. Largely uneventful as they only have a budget of $9mm and have to make repair and small upgrades to the entire length of downtown Main Street (although the landscaping will look nice). In this photo of their South Downtown streetscape, there is a rendering of the renovated Holiday Inn. Not sure if the actual hotel rendering is from the actual owner: Ah, I wanted to take a photo but wasn't sure if that'd be okay. I was the only one there tonight that wasn't a resident or works downtown. Edited February 4, 2014 by lockmat
HoustonBoy
I was hoping they'd make if the "Holiday Inn: Savoy Houston." Bummer
Avossos
It doesn't look super official. Changes are possible
democide
Official or not, this is one ugly hotel, but from what I read on here it will be a cheap (perhaps even the cheapest) hotel option in downtown. I like that type of honesty so alright. But I wish they imploded it along with the building on the right (Days Inn).
asubrt
But I wish they imploded it along with the building on the right (Days Inn). Careful, statements like that will have the preservationists on this board at your throat in no time.
Subdude
I'm frequently among the preservationists on the board, but in this case I don't think the Savoy has any particular architectural value that would merit its preservation. It's nice and all that they are re-using the existing building, but if they had chosen to demolish it wouldn't have been much of a loss. I kind of like it better with the revised paint scheme.
H-Town Man
Careful, statements like that will have the preservationists on this board at your throat in no time. Nah, as one of the "preservation twins," I can say it wouldn't be a big deal if either of these were imploded, and if it were the Days Inn, I'd help swing the wrecking ball myself. The thing about us preservationists, we don't just want to preserve buildings because they're old, but mainly if they are historically significant or contribute to the architectural landscape, like the Astrodome (world's first domed stadium) or 806 Main (Houston's first skyscraper) or the recently demolished Prudential Building (landmark example of an early modern skyscraper / Houston's first highrise outside of downtown).
Nate99
The Days Inn is quite something. I doubt that it will even make visually interesting urban decay as it rots away. It's freaking huge too in a sea of mostly empty lots. Maybe they'll eventually build tall buildings all around it and hide it from everyone.
Naviguessor
^^ It would make an interesting Bat Colony as the rendering suggests. Actually...I am sure it already is one.
aarosurf
I'd be very surprised if this is an actual rendering, considering it looks like it was done with MS paint.
cloud713
i agree it doesnt look like the most legit rendering of Holiday Inn, but the details of the surrounding area are pretty spot on?anyways i know some of your feelings on throwing glass curtain walls over existing structures, but in this case i think it would of looked much better in all glass, or imploded, along with the Days Inn. heh, oh well.. im glad downtown is getting an affordable hotel, right on the main street line. and it should add somewhat to the future pedestrian population in that area. HoustonIsHome
wtf.. they left those stubs sticking out on the right side that was supposed to be for a skybridge to the old building or something?Lol, that sky bridge stub is character right there. Ok, being serious, I have gone by that building hundreds of times. Maybe 1000s and I have never noticed the stubbs in person. I just know about it because if HAIF Edited February 6, 2014 by HoustonIsHome
names
Days Inn should be converted into a high-rise mausoleum.

Triton
Better quality: Edit: Based on what I'm seeing, I don't think this is the official rendering. This was made specifically to show off the renovation and developments along Main. Edited February 8, 2014 by Triton
mfastx
That Day's Inn is the biggest eyesore in downtown IMO. That and the parking lots.
Tumbleweed_Tx
haven't seen noticeable progress on this in a while- that doesn't mean they're not doing anything...
Triton
Construction workers were in full force today from the garage side to Main. It was all interior but you could hear a lot of work going on inside no matter where you were.

Subdude
My initial reaction was "Ewww! " but on further reflection I'm OK since it's not beige. I mean it's kind of funky.
Montrose1100
Looks like a quick tower put up in Germany after the war. I kind of like it. Ditto on the non-beige.

Triton
Why did your picture come out weird? I think it looks great! So much better than the other fake rendering. Edit: Fake rendering as in the one at the top of this page. The dark grey one. Edited March 6, 2014 by Triton
lockmat
Not too shabby. I'm curious what they do with the garage. There's still plenty of land around the building to develop in the future, no? Edited March 6, 2014 by lockmat
Avossos
I could do without the H on the side.
Subdude
With the green color it kind of reminds me of the Travis Tower a few blocks north, before they painted it white. And I mean that as a compliment.
ArchFan
... adding some lime-green polka dots on that yellow facade would make this one even more far-out-and-groovy! (I wonder if Austin Powers will occupy a penthouse here.)
Nate99
I still see the long neglected Savoy there in the rendering, perhaps due to the image quality. Still look forward to seeing it complete.
