Globe Department Stores

I also remember on the side of Gulfgate that Weingarten's was on, was a street, I think that the name of it was Woodridge/Woodbridge. I remember us going to a department store on that street called Globe. I thought that I heard that a Home Depot is now in that spot. Does anyone out there know anything about this?

Familiar with Globe but not that location. We had one by us, when i was growing up. I think it was owned by Walgreens...it was their answer for Woolco and Kmart.

I never went into a Sage, but I do remember they had ads on the paper bookcovers we had in school. They were like miniature billboards with short goofy phrases on them...can't think of one off hand. Maybe i can dig in my parents attic and find and rat chewed copy of one

I went to Globe between 1962-64. I remember us going into the pet department and my parents bought a solid white cat. I'm now 47.

There was a Globe on the northeast corner of Bellaire and Hillcroft. It was right across Hillcroft from the Sharpstown drive-in theater. Sage was on the southeast corner of Beechnut and Post Oak (now 610) right across from Meyerland. What occupies those locations now?

The southeast corner of Beechnut and Post Oak Road (now 610) is occupied by a shopping center anchored by Lowe's and Hobby Lobby.  There's an IHOP, a bank, a K&G men's store... that kind of thing.  Before Lowe's there was a Builder's Square.

EDIT: While we're on this topic, anybody remember Gibson's Discount Center?  I have a dim recollection of this chain from my early childhood.

Yes, I remember Gibson's. I didn't know that there were any of those stores over in Houston. I live in Orange, Texas (100 miles east of Houston). The stores have all bit the dust. There used to be one here in Orange, one in Beaumont, one in Vidor, and one in Port Arthur.

I don't know if they were in Houston proper or not.  I spent my earliest years in Galveston County.  I remember one in Dickinson and seem to recall others in the area.

I know there were Gibson's in Seabrook and Baytown. And throughout East Texas. We frequented the one in Longview when we lived there.

A couple of years ago, My wife and I were thinking about buying a lakefront house on Toledo Bend and ended up looking at, what we were told, was the former Gibson's Corporate Retreat. Very nice location. It was on a peninsula that jutted out into the lake.

They had subdivided it and were selling off the different cabins and such. The "houses" were all small rundown 60's a-frames. Nice lot but we wanted a decent house too. Unfortunately, we never followed through on the lakehouse idea.

You prodded my memory. Yes, I now remember a Pontiac car dealership either near or next door to that Globe Department Store. I heard that Globe has been long gone and that there is now a Home Depot store on the spot on ground that Globe once occupied.

Someone a few days ago posted a message that said the name of the Pontiac dealership near that Globe was called Frizzell. I just remember the Pontiac emblem/logo on the sign.

Anybody remember Shopper's Fair? That was the very first discount store that I can remember here. There was one on Shepherd at Pinemont across from St. Pius.

Sage was on I-45 around the Hobby Airport exit on the East side. It is now some sort of trade school I think. At any rate that building is actuall still there.

Torchlight answered about what occupies the old Sage location now, but I don't think anyone answered what sits on the old Globe location at Bellaire & Hillcroft. It's now a Fiesta Grocery Store. And across the street where the old Sharpstown Drive in was is now a strip center which I can't recall what is in it now. It was a Safeway a long time ago.

the sage was near monroe on the east side of the freeway.

i remember globe but i think it was where the lowe's is now. i also remember a Fedmart there as well during one incarnation. i think it opened after globe closed. can anyone jog my memory???

There was a Sage on Westhiemer and Stoney Brook. It is now a Guitar Center. I think it was a pharmacy, but I might be wrong. I remember the toy section well.

All that I can remember is going into the Globe Department Store on Woodridge, next to Gulfgate. We went into the pet department. My parents bought a solid white cat which they named "Purdy." Later we found out that it had a gastric disorder. It kept stinking up our house.

Globe (later Fed Mart then Mervyns) was where Lowes stands now. Sage was off of 45 and Monroe. The building still stands but I believe its a Houston Community College now.

Correct, the Globe is now Mervyns. Across from the Foley's that is now a mall anchor. But back in the day, there was no mall in Pasadena. We just cruised Foley's. And they had a little music section that sold records.

Yes, I remember well. Not at Globe, but I remember going into other department stores when I was a kid back in the 1960s and 1970s and going straight to the 45rpm singles shelves. The average price of them was $1. Only rarely could my parents afford to buy me an album.

As for Gibsons, a few years back there was still on on Highway 6 near Navasota. Doubt it is still there though.

That was a Globe store across Woodridge from Gulfgate, the front of the store wasn't facing woodridge, which was south of the store, it faced east. I lived in the apartments across the parking lot from the front of the building, Gulfgate Village Apartments for about 17 years.

I remember the Globe across from Gulfgate. It was the only one we ever went to. I think there was a Michelin tire store close to it with the big white michelin man standing either on the roof or in front of the store. On Woodridge on the other side of 45 was the christmas tree lot where we always bought our christmas tree.

Yes, I'm now 47 and I still remember the Globe Department Store from the years (1962-64) that we lived in Houston. Back then, I had my picture taken with Santa Claus at Globe. My mother still has that picture. I also remember my parents buying a solid white cat in the Globe pet department. They named it "Purty". But it had a problem with intestinal gas. It stunk up our house.

Are you talking about W.T. Grant? A five-and-dime store like F.W. Woolworth and Ben Franklin? There was one just a little ways down from Newberry's in that open middle part of then-Gulfgate Shopping City. I remember my parents bought me some Silly Putty in that store.

There was an oriental restaurant accross the street from the Globe on Bellaire and Hillcroft. The name of the restaurant was the Mongolian Barbeque. I had my first fortune cookie there. Sharpstown Drive-In Theater was behind the restaurant.

Years later they tore down the restaurant and put up a shopping center with a Safeway grocery store in it. Casa Ole was located there in the 1980's as well.

The coolest GLOBE was on North Shepherd...about a mile south of Tidwell. It stood on the current site of the City Of Houston 911 Emergency Center...across the street from St. Pius High School. As a kid, I got lost in that store one day...I was terrified.

I remember my cousin and I going to a Globe Department Store that was on the street that ran alongside of then Gulfgate Shopping City next to then Weingarten's. According to the map I'm looking at, that street is/was called Woodridge.

I worked at the Globe on Woodridge in 1974 for one summer. The tire store next door was Fisk, had a little boy in pajamas and holding a candle with the slogan "Time to retire.".

The only Globe left after the late 70s was one in McAllen Texas. It was closed about 5 years ago. It made so much money from people coming across the border to shop they kept it open.

I remember Sage because it was the only non grocery store open on Sundays. They would block off sections of items you couldn't buy because of the Blue Laws.
