ChannelTwoNews
Have only seen a few brief pieces on potential redevelopment of this site at the Katy Freeway and the Beltway, however this is the first I've been able to find on something concrete. Per bisnow... http://www.bisnow.com/commercial-real-estate/houston/bisnow-exclusive-sneak-peek-at-block-10-west/ It deals with the conversion of the former Great Indoors store into office space, with plans to add a new 15 story building. PDF of current plans from Hicks. This version says the office building will be 12 stories though. http://www.hicksventures.com/assets/pdf/Block10Max.pdf Edited April 11, 2013 by ChannelTwoNews
livincinco
Lots of development in that area. Not surprising though since it is the "centre" of the city.
lockmat
Ah so this is the same company that planned an office tower on post oak but never did.
Motis B Totis
They are making a lot of progress with phase 1 of the project. Hopefully this starts a chain reaction for more construction along north of I-10 inside the beltway.

Gary
Drove by yesterday, and this phase one development is really strange. Seems like an odd use of such a large piece of property.

lockmat
No landscaping makes it look like a converted strip center.
Texasota
I mean, in terms of site plan, it *is* just a g*d-d4*! strip center.
lockmat
Did it replace one? Those handicap spaces look old.
no1racer
There used to be a Outdoor/Home store, "The Great Outdoors", owned by the Sears brand. It closed a couple years ago.
IronTiger
So I was browsing on Google Earth (updated imagery from just two months ago!) and found that the former Great Indoors seems to have built a parking garage behind it. I didn't remember if there was a parking garage beforehand, and there wasn't. However, The Great Indoors is still empty (empty parking lot). What on earth would they build a parking garage for? Has a redevelopment plan been announced yet? Thanks

zaphod
Being medical offices would this one have a better chance of making it given current events? Can existing office space get easily converted to medical use, or is it more economical to build it new? Tumbleweed_Tx
Medical offices are just offices with specialized equipment. you don't really need a specialized building until you have beds and surgery centers.

Really? It seems like there might be different data and electrical service and/or HVAC requirements, not to mention different load-bearing capacities if there might be medical equipment such as MRIs etc.

The bones of the building are the same but the finish is significantly different. Medical offices have much more extensive plumbing and wall divisions. They also have different developers and investors who specialize in them. Yes, this building has a much better chance than a general office proposal in Houston.
