Hmmm, very plain jane. Glad to see that the effort is still being put forth in renderings which I guess means they're still moving forward with this?

It looks like they are planning on adding space on top of the parking garage on the right as well.

It will be a great addition to the skyline, from all angles. Was keeping my fingers crossed it would have gained a few floors. I think an 850ft skyscraper there could really play nicely with the Wells Fargo & Chase Tower.

Seems like most of the effort and creativity is going into areas that only employees will see.

I don't think that this is anything new...just renderings that we haven't seen and a few more details, like the additional space atop the garage.   Still looks good to me.

I count 50 stories on top of a 3 story pedestal for a total of 53 stories.  Is that what we had with the earlier renderings?  I too would love to see it grow to at least 850 feet.

This is going to be a very big building!  It would appear to be quite a bit taller than the former Continental Tower - which is around 740' tall.  Probably will be the fourth tallest when completed in 2056.

I miss the old Continental lights... for more than one reason.  A shame that airline is gone.

This rendering appears to be more in scale with the surrounding buildings. That will be a dominating highrise on the skyline... especially from 10 and 45.

My god. People complain about an old falling down house being town down on this site, as well as complain about a huge 53 story skyscraper going up. Makes me question whether people really want the city to urbanize . . . .

Nice to see that start date getting moved forward from 2016. I actually suspect this one may get scaled up a little bit before all is said and done given Chevron's commitment to this area.

Would the price of adding more space now be more cost effective than building another building 10 years down the line?

Depends on the marginal cost. A new edifice of substantial size would likely cost more than a bit of additional space in this tower. However, I do recognize that additional stories above 50 floors are pricey.

If it's just Houston that's getting expensive, it will hamstring some of the buildings being proposed downtown. However, if Chevron gets done spending on that $60 billion Australian gas plant, they might start looking at Houston again.

I created for myself to get an idea of what downtown would look like after all the new proposed towers are built. I thought it might entertain a few others at this website so I posted it on the 'skyline update' thread. Obviously I took liberties with Chevron Tower. It sounds like the final design may still be up in the air. Who knows, maybe the final design of the tower will be inspired by their own logo.

Would be nice, but seeing since this is Houston, we're more than likely going to be stuck with the original "box" they presented us with.

Site work and new construction of an office development in Houston. Design plans call for the construction of a 46-story office tower. Plans include 1.7 million square feet of space.


As of October 15, 2014, this project is on hold. A firm construction timeline has not been established, and a decision on when the project will become active again will not be decided until first quarter 2015 at the absolute earliest.

I think the Downtown Development Map pegs construction for the 3rd quarter of 2015. I am still quite optimistic about this building. We knew the construction start date had been delayed until 2015 at the earliest. Oil prices might hit a sweet spot for its development--low enough so that Chevron remains profitable but not so high as to make additional exploration in the immediate future particularly attractive to Chevron.

I think this is a non-news event, since I don't know if this bid advertisement is new or old. Normally, they would not post a request unless there were some movement expected (after all, why advertise something if you're still just contemplating your navel?). Let's watch oil prices - which are in the low $80s at the moment.

I am hearing the plan is for a 3rd quarter 2015 start on this one.  Also, when this project is complete, Chevron will vacate significant amounts of leased space in the Cullen Center and Allen Center (~20 floors in each).

Aside from height, this building is a complete letdown. It's bland, mundane, the water color renderings don't help. It's happening, then it's on hold. Then we hear of a start date and then that gets pushed back. 

 

It's sort of exhausting going back and forth---which is why I gave up on Ashby long ago. I couldn't care less if that thing [Ashby] ever gets built or not. I'm tired of hearing about it. Can anybody understand where I'm coming from or am I just being ridiculous?

if you have any familiarity with commercial development and construction in general than yes - you are being ridiculous. this is how these things work... there are an incredible amount of moving parts nevermind the fact that the oil and gas industry as a whole is in a precarious time given the decline of oil and gas prices of late.

 

btw i'd be shocked if this building got off the ground any time soon.

Shocked is a pretty strong word. But in the sense of construction delays, there might be some truth. Big projects are delayed across the boards.

Hasn't 3Q 2015 been on the Downtown Development Map for awhile now? The same map indicates that One Market Square is slated to begin construction this quarter. I think Chevron is a bit more likely than One Market Square, but would prefer a presser from Chevron on this project before I get too excited.

I, for one, am not too upset with the design of this building. It looks like the ring on top will light up.

In a way I'm glad the architecture is so dull, so I don't feel the huge letdown when they delay it a year or possibly cancel it altogether. If it gets built, I'm happy, since it will add a lot of mass to that side of the skyline and enhance the overall sense of "power" in our skyline. But it's no stunner, for sure. Architectural textbooks will not have to be rewritten when/if this thing gets built.

Chevron is spending billions on capital investments (refineries).  These future money makers have placed office building(s) on the back burner....or so I've heard.

Isn't that 50 billion dollar thing in australia supposed to be done soon though? But yeah, with dropping oil prices who knows about a new tower
