Grand Texas Theme Park At 23065 Highway 242

From Six Flag Houston forum post by structured_txguy

I'm hesitant to outline all of what Mr. Galland reviewed this afternoon about Grand Texas Sports and Entertainment District, but I'll note the few things about which most of us would ask:

1. There are in fact more than a few closings for the property taking place this week and next, so a good bit of movement on-site should be seen very soon. The RV Park closed yesterday (9/17).

2. One of the hotels on-site is to be an Embassy Suites, considered the "full-service" hotel.

3. A rendering of the fully-phased-out Big Rivers water park was shown. It seemed gigantic and well-outfitted. A sense of any theme to any buildings, however, was difficult to discern in plan.

4. And yes, the big roller coaster, to be called "Timber," appears to be a full remix of Silver Dollar City's "Outlaw Run" (which Mr. Galland and research team did go and ride and did name by name at the presentation). So it was confirmed this is an RMC creation for Grand Texas

Their facebook page mentioned an announcement and update was coming in February. Hopefully it wasn't just this motorsports news.

Probably what it's going to be. The motorsports complex was suppose to be the first phase of this project anyway.

Park details

In addition to a factory outlet mall, Grand Texas will feature a 150-acre theme park, 40-acre water park, 83-acre Sportsplex, 30-acre Speedsportz Racing Park, RV park with 144 lots, four hotels and 450,000 square feet of retail and dining in a “Downtown Texas” area once completed.

Phase 1 of the Big Rivers Waterpark will span 28 acres and feature the largest wave pool in Houston with programmable waves, a long lazy river, multiple children’s slides and attractions, splash pad areas and extreme slides for thrill-seekers, Galland said.

“Phase 1 will make it the second-largest water park in Houston, and we will be basically one slide short of the largest,” Galland said. “We feel we’ll have a superior wave pool and lazy river. Phase 2 will be completed over the three years following that and will make it the largest and the best.”

The first phase of the theme park will span 71 acres and will offer one wooden roller coaster engineered by the same company that produced the Twisted Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Galland said. The park will also feature a children’s coaster, a family coaster and two extreme thrill-seeker coasters. In addition, the first phase will include 20 other historic Texas-themed rides and an entertainment area with stagecoach and boat rides.

“We actually tried to negotiate the purchase of Greezed Lightnin’ [a roller coaster at the former Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston],” Galland said. “Unfortunately when we sent our engineers out there, the cost to rehabilitate Greezed Lightnin’ exceeded the budget we felt was reasonable for that type of ride. As it stands, all the rides will be new to the area.”

However, construction of the theme park is contingent upon the addition of a new Entergy electricity substation near Splendora, which is expected to break ground within the next few months and be complete in 2017, Galland said.

Additional sections

It is essential for the RV park to open first this fall because it allows the developers to run utilities across the tract to help provide infrastructure for other portions of the development, Galland said.

The Sportsplex will begin scheduling games for sports, such as baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, 7-on-7 football and rugby, at its indoor facilities and outdoor fields later this year.

By late 2018 through mid-2019, Galland said he anticipates all sections of the park will be open and operating in their initial phases. Grand Texas, which could bring in hundreds of millions in sales tax revenue each year for the area, is designed with extra acreage to adapt and expand for future build-out over the next 20 years, he said.

“The site at the current size right now is larger than Disney California Adventure Park,” Galland said.

More than 10,000 new part-time and full-time jobs will be created through Grand Texas, including all ancillary employment, Galland said.

I'm sorry but this thing just sounds crazy. It gets more convoluted each time a new press release about a new extended time table comes out. Frankly this new time table makes very little sense and really an RV park first. Like I said when it was first announced I just

don't see this coming together.

Can't they just buy a new Greezed Lightnin', one of my dreams has to come true  :( also.... Why an RV park? Whats the point of that, is there a significant number of fathers following Robin Williams' footsteps in taking his dysfunctional family on an RV trip?

Probably cause they don't have the money or financing they had hoped for but they want to do something with the land. This project seems like a big pie in the sky to me. How many years have they been talking about it?

This one blends in mentally with the whole Captain Planet/Dinosaur park thing that was supposed to be up in the same area, so it feels like somebody has been trying to do something for a decade now.

So the WS&D is underway? That's the most important part of the project (besides, you know, the rides) so that's good sign.

That means the developer either worked out a deal with whatever city to pay for the necessary infrastructure in exchange for tax breaks or reimbursement, or the city put forth the up front cost which means they have faith in the potential of this project.

Grand Texas Venue Eyes Opening Date

[quote]The first venue at the Grand Texas Sports and Entertainment District — a highly anticipated but long-delayed mixed-use development northeast of Houston — plans to open this spring.

Speedsportz Racing Park is expected to fully open to the public by May after its soft opening in April, President and co-owner Alan Rudolph told Community Impact. The complex will include a European-style rental kart facility and rental track, a performance track and a performance pad, as well as the newly formedAlan Rudolph Racing Academy and a Karting Hall of Fame, Speedsportz said previously.

If you jump on to Facebook, search for 'Lance Martin Grand Texas' and 'Jessica Marquez Grand Texas' -  Both pages are now providing much more frequent construction updates on the Grand Texas Sports and Entertainment District.

Some updated info., per a smattering of comments on Jessica's page:

- The clubhouse for the RV Park is finally going vertical, and should take 6 weeks to be completed.  The on-site team for Grand Texas will end up using that clubhouse for their offices until the water park administration building is built.

- An updated layout of Big Rivers water park should be released later this month (March '16), along with the names and renderings of each of the attractions.

- SpeedsportZ Racing Park is hoping to open this summer.

-  The water park will open next spring:  should be breaking ground by this summer, and the anticipated construction timeline is 10 months.  Delivery of the attractions slide pieces/materials is scheduled this year - all the pieces are apparently fabricated.

-  The water park will have about 25 slides, including kids' slides.

-  Another gated endeavor, called 'Gator Bayou,' will feature fishing and other outdoor activities - details on that may be released later this month, when those for the water park are released.

- Construction on the sports fields portion will begin this year, and also open next year.

-  Grand Texas theme park construction will start right after the water park is in operation, w/ an 18-24 month expected timeframe.

- The theme park expects to have a large Halloween event, which will be "one of (their) largest" events.

- The Outlet mall is to be a separate entity than Downtown Texas, and is not replacing it - so there are two separate shopping/entertainment components aside from the gated parks.

- The Outlets will open before Downtown Texas, but will be connected to DT.

-  A stoplight will be added to 242, w/ a pedestrian crosswalk for now, for individuals wanting to walk between the main District and SpeedsportZ Racing Park.  A shuttle might also be utilized to move people around.
