cloud713 has already knocked this out of the water, but I ended up going to the park today (I didn't think I was going to have enough time to).   Let me just start it from this pic... Is this really

We have very few affordable golf courses in town as it is. How about a better course

THIS.  Roommate and I took a trip up to Dallas recently.  The municipal/public courses up there are leaps and bounds better than what Houston has to offer.  Herman really needs to get it together.  It could be a great inner loop course... See memorial park.

Beginning this week, the entire site, save for the existing parking lot, has been fenced and clearing work has begun.  I assume they will not close the existing parking lot until the new lot is built?

Unfortunately, have cleared a lot of old trees.

That pagoda was in the garden area that is being re-done into Centennial Gardens.  They are moving it out of there as part of the redo.  Not sure where it is going to end up.

From what I can make out from the drawings it will end up across the street from the ampitheater.

That pyramid thing is interesting. I wonder if it'll have an interesting view on top. This city is so flat that even a little hill can make a cool vantage point for photography.

I just saw it yesterday. The mount is much higher than 15 feet. Think 20 to 25 feet. The long berm along the parking lot/south side is about that high. Weddings on the spirilling mount? That'd be a long procession. The couple would look like the figures on top of the Wedding Cake, however.

Yeah I was impressed how tall it was. I know it's not as tall as the Miller Theater hill but it might still have interesting views if it lines up with a clear view towards the med center or downtown.

I have been watching them dig up and roll on large cylinders the 100 year old oaks that were in the parking lot. They're moving some across the street to the Miller theater side. Pretty amazing considering the size.if you haven't seen them you should go by.  I imagine the pyramid builders would have liked the cylinders they're using. I noticed where they are building the Levy park tower there are several oaks sitting on blocks waiting to be planted in Levy park. Also the thickness of the root ball is surprising.

the park needed a renovation of the botanical gardens, happy to see it finally being done........wish it were more aggressive in it's design and wish the golf course was taken out......honestly so many other uses could be built in it's place, softball, soccer or add more land to the zoo and garden spaces.......also underground parking would be great.......

There is no botanical garden at Hermann Park. I agreed, if the golf course wasn't there it would make an excellent spot for a botanical garden. For now the best hope for room to expand is to turn all the surface lots into one garage.

This. I don't think inner city public golf courses make much sense in the inner city. I wish they would convert it to several baseball fields, soccer fields, and tennis/bball if there's room. Be awesome to have more youth and adult sports leagues.

Sigh. I understand funding is a big issue for this but I wish we could do better with our parking solutions for our marque park.

Seriously, it would have been great if they did an underground parking garage like Discovery Green. That way they could build multiple levels downward and had greenspace on top. But like you said, they were probably constrained by a budget.

I don't think any of us really care for the parking solution, but Discovery Green was a very high profile job with a bigger budget because it was seen as a major intervention type project and so got a lot of funding to really change the area. I think this gets it's budget more from donations and so by it's very nature it has a stricter budget. Always something that can be added upon in the future and with development already beginning to pick up in the area, I'm sure after 3-5 years we might see that parking lot turned into something better.

I didn't notice it in the picture above mine but they are building a massive staircase in the round mound. You can barely see it in my picture.

I don't see a massive staircase in your picture.  But, FWIW, I believe the plan is for a walkway winding up around the "mound", and a water feature coming down the center of the side seen in your picture.

at first thats what i thought it was too. then i wasnt sure/thought it may be a large staircase. now im back to agreeing that its a water feature. i guess the water flows under the spiral walkway down the front..

Yup, that's what I thought. But that water feature just sounds even more impressive. It's going to be beautiful.

As far as I know, that is still the plan.

They've still got some work to do.

wow they do have a lot of landscaping left to do. are you in the Parklane or something? heh. hopefully the plants are mature transplants from elsewhere and not new growth/small immature plants.
