Is it just me or is it kind of funny that this is getting built with ground floor retail while so many of the complexes in the East End and Midtown aren't?

the woodlands is committed to mixed use in town center, for the most part. the woodlands development company/howard hughes owns all or most of the land, unlike midtown and the east end; no common owner of property.....

The Howard Hughes Corporation and its wholly owned subsidiary The Woodlands Development Company has started construction on a 390-unit, multifamily development — One Lake’s Edge — situated in the new 66-acre mixed-use development of Hughes Landing on Lake Woodlands. Hughes Landing will be a dynamic environment within The Woodlands that will feature up to 11 office buildings; shopping, dining and entertainment; a specialty grocer; an upscale hotel; a fitness center and up to 800 multi-family residences.

Located on 200-acre Lake Woodlands, One Lake’s Edge will feature panoramic views of the lake and will be only steps away from the shopping, dining and entertainment venues at Hughes Landing’s Restaurant Row. The luxury apartments will feature one-, one-plus-study, two- and three-bedroom designs, with an average size of 984 square feet. Amenities include a fitness center, oversized pool deck, show kitchen and large club room with elevated outdoor patio overlooking the lake, along with more than 22,000 square feet of retail planned on the ground floor. Upscale finishes include wood floors, stainless steel gas appliances, granite countertops, roller shades and Nest “learning” thermostats. One Lake’s Edge will be pet-friendly with an onsite wash station, kayak and bike storage and covered apartment-level parking.

Construction has started on the 825,000-square-foot, eight-story complex, with pre-leasing planned for fall 2014 and occupancy set for early 2015.

Whole Foods Coming to The Woodlands

Whole Foods Market is expanding its local reach with a new store planned for The Woodlands.

The Austin-based grocer will soon begin construction on a 40,000-square-foot location in Hughes Landing, the 66-acre mixed-use development on Lake Woodlands. The new store is expected to open in 2015.

“Local residents have long expressed strong interest in having a Whole Foods Market in The Woodlands,” Paul Layne, executive vice president of master-planned communities for the Howard Hughes Corp. said in an announcement. “It will be an exceptional destination within Hughes Landing and across The Woodlands, adding to the many benefits of living, working and playing in this vibrant community.” The Woodlands Development Co. is a subsidiary of the Howard Hughes Corp.

The main entrance of the store will be off Lake Front Circle, near the intersection of Lake Front and Lake Woodlands Drive.

“The Woodlands is a great fit for us,” Mark Dixon, president of Whole Foods Market’s Southwest Region, said in the announcement. “We are excited about the Hughes Landing development and its central location that is easily accessible to residents of The Woodlands and surrounding areas.”

Now if only those Austin-fools will just build one down in the League City/Clear Lake area (but NOT on Bay Area Blvd!!!!!!!!)!  It would be very well used and busy every day.

I was actually thinking Hughes Landing would get this.  I figured it was only a matter of time before Whole Foods came to Montgomery County and that this would be the perfect place for them.  I'm still a bit perplexed that Central Market never went into the Market Street developmen rather than that standard HEB.  But the Woodlands has plenty of other nice stores and developments so I'm not feeling too sorry for them.

A crane has been erected on the site and construction has begun.

With this addition, there are currently 5 buildings under construction on the north end of the lake.

im confused. why would exxon build a new corporate campus with 20 buildings (assuming they over built to accomodate future growth) only to split their employees up again in seperate buildings a few miles away? I call bs.

exxon wanted a separate location for their back office employees - administrative and the like. they were initially going to keep them at greenspoint but believed it created too great a divide between their employees to have the operations side in a class A++++ facility and the back office side in the slums of greenspoint. thought it would create a class warfare type environment.

this is not an uncommon strategy for large corporate users.

I wonder why they want a separate location for their "back-office" employees.  Any idea of the thinking behind this?

Read the writing on the wall folks.., this location will be for 'front office' staff (C-suite). Since when did 'back office' staff average $125,000 annually?

"Sadler asked what employees would be at Hughes Landing location, but Alexander said the company still is sorting that out. It will be professional people, IT … some real estate department will be there …” he said. “We tend to move people around. We are excited.”

Also from a company press release in 2012...,

"Exxon Mobil corporate headquarters in Irving and XTO [Energy Inc., an Exxon Mobil subsidiary] in Fort Worth will not be relocated to the new campus,” said Kimberly Brasington, a company spokeswoman.

As structured and calculated, as they tend to be, if Exxon is still sorting this out, then my name is Billy D. Williams. Staying mum is a clever strategy that keeps the Irving folks at bay for now but soon the company will be referred to as "The Woodlands, Texas based ExxonMobil Corp."

With only around 400 employees at its corporate headquarters in Irving, where could the 1,400 employees relocating to Hughes Landing all of a sudden be coming from?  Well, it just so happens there's around 1,000 located at Fort Worth's XTO offices.

Shhhhh...., I'm excited as well!  :D

Houstonian, my first response to your post is that the theory you put forward is way off, since we've been told that Headquarters will "remain in Irving". I work for ExxonMobil and that's what has been communicated to us. However, I am not certain that things won't change, so I won't be hasty to discredit what you've theorized. On the other hand I can tell you that $125,000 is not far above the average salary at ExxonMobil across all positions. If the top executive's salaries were to be included in these number's, that $179 million in salaries would be much higher, almost double to venture a guess.

Yeah, when I read about the $125,000 average salary this morning, I too thought this is probably not just a "back-office" facility.

Why do I feel Nancy's article here is a direct response to our speculation? http://www.chron.com/ Ok, it could be just a coincidence.

Until ExxonMobil gives a good reason why they are choosing to move different groups off campus to The Woodlands proper, I'll stick by my statement..., somethings brewing!

With no confirmation from the Exxon spokesman regarding the XTO folks in Fort Worth, maybe its just that group making a move.

There wasn't a direct link to the article. Maybe I missed it on the home page because I'm on my phone.

Hopefully Nancy knows something we don't. If all of these significant investments of new major campuses and employee consolidation are anything to go by, it's only a matter of time before both Exxon and Chevron move HQ to the Houston area. I give it about 5 years. Shall we place bets? Heh

i don't know what makes you think exxon owes anyone any explanation to anybody whatsoever. you can speculate all you want but their keeping mum means nothing at all.

edit: and i assure you nancy knows less than many posters on this site.

I didn't mean to imply that Exxon 'owed' me or anyone any explanation, but thanks for giving me permission to speculate swtsig.

Once again guys I hate to dash anyone's hopes of ExxonMobil's HQ relocating to The Woodlands, but I will. Per EM's rules I cannot post direct quotes from employee communications, but for the most part work groups have already been informed as to whom will be occuppying the new satellite offices in The Woodlands. Those groups include the IT department, HR, Tax and a couple other groups. They were under the impression that they would be relocated to the new campus with everyone else, but when the decision was made to lease the satellite offices and they were informed there was a little sigh of relief let out by some employees, especially the ones that live in the Sugar Land area since their move to the new offices is delayed a little. Also, just to reiterate, $125,000 is average for an EM employee.

You're not dashing any hopes TBooze.., Exxon has never said Irving will be the HQ until Jesus returns. So as soon as Rex retires I (and many others) fully expect that the HQ will move to The Woodlands.., mark my words! :)

And maybe it's just me, but while I want all 3 HQ's to relocate to Houston at some point (Exxon, Chevron, and BP) I'd much rather prefer the Exxon HQ.., sibling rivalry. Until then we will welcome the additional jobs!

If your hypothesis is correct, they will secure the lease of the remainder of the second building.  For security reasons, no way they allow that space to be occupied by others.

Security can easily be maintained with multiple tenants in one building, it's done all the time.

Not to mention, over the course of the past couple of years, Exxon spokesmen have put out some pretty contradictory statements regarding their plans for consolidation or non-consolidation, or whatever the message is this week.
