It's a 300-car parking garage for the Incarnate Word Academy. #41 on the map. Big bummer, I know.

If I'm not mistaken, we have seen no renderings or plans for this garage. It is actually planned as some sort of joint venture between the church/academy and Houston First. Given their other work in the area, I'm pretty confident it will include GFR.

However, I also suspect part of its purpose was to provide parking for the now-canceled Nau Center. So I wonder if it may not go forward just yet. Haven't seen anything about it for quite some time.

I hope you're right. GFR would go a looong way in not compromising the good changes happening in this area.

Its been said here before, looong ago, but a huge sports bar with lots of tv screens and beer would be a great retail anchor for this area.

Wont that be going into the Marriott down the street.

Yeah, but I'm talking about this corridor dead in front of the baseball park. Like right next door or across the street, ala "Homeplate Bar and Grill"

There's room for another option down there, a big one, like ESPN ZONE, especially with all the new residential going up right here. The buzz on gameday would be amazing. Especially during the playoffs!

It's the Catholic Church. That's why. Add it to the list.

...

9,226. Lines too long to see the Sistine Chapel.

9,227. Objected to marrying my friend's visibly pregnant girlfriend and him.

9,228. Expects me to go to confession at least once per year.

9,229. No ground floor retail on parking garage in downtown Houston.

Done.

I hope my post wasn't construed as attacking Catholicism. The previous comment just struck me as funny. I don't think architecture is a weak point for the Catholic church, generally speaking.

I'm catholic and I chuckled.

Comparing the construction pic to the rendering (same angle from Texas Ave), I'd say we have a slight design change.

Upper portions of the building are now entirely brick instead of alternating portions of stone & brick. I like the change.

I agree, this design will age beautifully.

Maybe I am missing what you are saying. Looks like they will paint the brick grey/white on the upper two floors in certain sections, and there will still be stone on the first floor.

You really think they'd spend all that money to use quality stone and brick, just to go back and paint it white? I'm pretty sure if they were sticking to that, then they'd just get white brick.

But idk, maybe you know something I don't and I'll look like a jabroni in a few weeks.

Anyway, the line that was to seperate the brick from the top stone/white brick is still there, and it runs all the way across the building. Personally, I think it looks out of place, but that's just nitpicking.

I think that's there because, as the original rendering shows, they will paint the bricks white above that line on certain portions of the upper floors. Why do all that just to paint it grey/white? I didn't tell them to do it man.  :)

Zoomed in on my Macbook. The textures match. Unfortunately looks like painted brick to me. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

Why would they take down scaffolding if they had to paint the over the brick later?

I agree with Brijonmang. I think the original plan was stone or stucco but changed to brick. This matches better with MMP & Union Station then the alternating look on the pervious renders.
