H-Town Man
Reminds me of this London church, destroyed by Nazi bombs:
barracuda
I think it's a great way to preserve history, and I'm glad to see it's not going to be turned into more town homes. The remains of the church should provide a great backdrop for the small park.
Talbot
Finally a good idea from the city! Sounds like a great plan, and I am glad that they are trying to save a historic building facade.
Trae
We definitely need more historical preservation like this.
N Judah
I think it would be cool if they maintained some of the inner structural elements too -- the more random-looking the better.

It does not look very well thought out
jpedders
About a month ago I saw a gathering of news crews and people at the Bethel Baptist Church at Andrews and Crosby. I spoke to a representative from the Mayors office who mentioned that the City had entered into an agreement to purchase the property and turn it into a public plaza. The plan was to study if the facade of the building could be preserved...ala Coventry Cathedral. It appears that work has begun on bracing the facade and cleaning up the property as of last weekend. Andrews Street has been closed at the church and crews are there. Edited May 20, 2009 by jpedders

kylejack
No need to quibble about whether or not its Midtown. Is the Wet Spot in Midtown? I would say yes. Midtown probably ends about Cleveland street, so that's only about 2 blocks short of this project. More people know where Midtown roughly is than Freedman's Town, so I'd say its forgivable. jpedders
Thanks for the link. The church sits right behind my property so I'm pretty excited about the project. Edited June 2, 2009 by jpedders
kylejack
That area north of Gray, west of downtown, east of Taft, south of Allen Parkway can be kinda scary at night...I love the look of this project, but I don't know that I'll visit it often and that makes me sad. :/

More people know where Midtown roughly is than Freedman's Town, so I'd say its forgivable. What Freedmen's town? You mean Freedmen's townhomesI'll tell you what really gets me... the boundaries of Midtown vs. Neartown. Where the heck is Neartown anyway??? It appears to be a part of Montrose. My only concern for this park is what kind of security is going to be there? This is a highly transitional area where there are still (unfortunately) a lot of shady characters, and there have already been a slew of arrests at or near that church. A park doesn't seem to alleviate this problem.
jpedders
The neighborhood around the church is all new townhomes, Edge condos and Post Midtown. Not bad at night but gets worse to the west a few blocks. I walk around there all the time at night but usually within confines of the new apartments so it's well lit.
sargento03
I think "freedmen's town" is the other name for 4th ward... there are brown "historical" signs on all edges of the neighborhood... I kinda like it more than 4th ward

Brian Reading
not sure i'd call this midtown like khou is calling it. this is more 4th ward. here are some conceptual plans.Ha, yeah kind of like how they say that the University of Houston is in "Southeast Houston" rather than Third ward. If we're in Southeast Houston, Downtown must be in Northeast!

Double L
I was hoping they would do something like this when I first heard of the church burning down in 2005. Should be a great addition to the fourth ward. Edited February 8, 2011 by Double L
Lotus
The article linked above says the building was built in 1950. Is that correct? Nice gesture and project but wow...the bending over backwards by the city to save four walls from a 60 year old building is amazing.

Pleak
Does anybody have any current pics of what the final plans are? All the links are old and appear to be broken. (at least for me)
TonyM
one of the guys at the site said the new park will be ready in March or April but that seems really far outConsidering how long and how much money it's taken the city to get this far, March or April would be really quick. Interested to see what they do with this relic, should've been leveled years ago . . .
TonyM
Much of the lot has been cleared of brush and debris. They've got a bobcat on site as well. We'll see where this goes . . .
