Moving On

yeah, I am curious about that too, do you photoshop all of these or actually find them?

I pretty much like the downtown skyline, but I don't know about the Galleria areas skyline. Seems to be too many super talls that would fit better in DT. I think some smaller towers would make the skyline look denser.

Isn't this kind of similar to about where sprawl is today? I mean on the original map it doesn't show it, but there is alot of development currently where this is colored in. Also I assume you used the bucket function. I only say this because it is funny that you leave areas inside the loop "undeveloped".

he might have just used the bucket but oh well...i think its cool someone is putting up things they wish houston could look like in the future...there should be a thread made specifically for things like this (forumer's ideas and concepts for houston's future)

Instead of just the central downtown getting larger and larger, I imagine more "downtowns" (high-rise employment centers) springing up around the area. Other large cities have a lot more of these than we do. Greenspoint will probably get larger. Maybe a whole new high-rise cluster will spring up around HP/Compaq, for example.

I agree that the future map has shaded a lot of areas that are developed right now. I also noticed a lot of new roads. But I didn't notice the Grand Parkway in there. ;) And I didn't see Houston sprawled out to past Conroe and down to the border of Galveston (a larger map would have been needed). It also would have been cool to see an aerial photograph of Houston doctored up so that all the green space was replaced with development. Heck, while we're at it, why don't have the shore line encroaching due to the melting of the polar ice caps from global warming, so that all of Clear Lake is under water. :)

Houston is moving very slowly. 2005 has been so far not a good year for Houston. All the major projects is in San Antonio, or Dallas. The only major projects around Houston seem like hosptials.

So far this has been an boring year in Houston. I guess next year (2006) would be better.

Don't be so pessimistic, the year is only a little over halfway over. There have been many smaller projects, plus as you said tons of hospitals being built. Also the Orion is a pretty big project that started this year (or close). Though someone said it was on hold, but I hope that changes. Also a conversion to res. in greenway, I believe two hotels in uptown, plus a res. building under construction in riverway, plus a fair amount of proposals. I think 2006 will be a better year, but 2005 was far from bad.

It seems we always overlook, or ignore, residential growth. We're too quick to slap a sprawl tag on all new developing subdivisions and move on. Houston is growing by leaps & bounds in the suburbs, so with time I'm sure the commercial, and even industrial sector will follow.

What do you mean about building under construction in riverway?

First off,

I don't understand why everyone is so negative towards this. I am only assuming you are just playing the "what if" game. No harm in that. Perhaps some of your ideas could be marketed in a futuristic movie starring Houston.......similar to I ROBOT (Chicago) or THE ISLAND (Los Angeles).

A couple of questions though- you seem to have the time to "imagine", so while imagining here are some things i think you may have missed.

1. In time does it not look like 1960/HWY 6 is shaping up to be a third loop?

2. The towers are slender- which seems to fit into current conventional wisdom that HUGE office towers will be replaced by slender residential centers; ie. Calatrava masterpieces.

3. Take the fantasy one step further- what would prompt this explosion of building

in the Houston area?

4. I don't believe that certain icons to Houston would be blocked by new developments.

5. I completely agree that something VERY tall in the center of DT would help balance the skyline a bit.

Just my humble thoughts.

Don't be discouraged by the negativity.

Keep dreaming.

Look up Hollywood.

Oh, sorry and one more thing........

I was disapointed that you did not show advancements in Trans. by 2050 or even further. Larger freeways........developed mass transit........magnetic wonders or even........let's really get creative..........flying cars.

I am a little jealous of Chicago right now. I saw a show yesterday about the Hotel that Trump is building on the waterfront down there. It is awe inspiring. I hope our new downtown multi-use project The Pavillion will be of this caliber.
