The 50-year-old hospital has been sitting vacant since 1992, when the existing Ben Taub General Hospital opened its doors. “The plan at the time was to renovate the original hospital then and have two hospitals up and running, but the hospital district ran into some financial difficulties in the late 1990s, and we had to put it off,” said George Masi, executive vice president and COO of the Harris County Hospital District." Highrise Tower Posted November 23, 2019 Share Posted November 23, 2019 Ben Taub caps $70 million operating room expansion https://www.tmc.edu/news/2019/11/ben-taub-caps-70-million-operating-room-expansion/ A new 74,425-square-foot space overlooking the Houston Zoo’s lush greenery includes five new operating rooms, two hybrid operating rooms, a blood bank, pharmacy, central sterile processing unit, 18 beds for pre-operative and post-operative care and an oral surgical clinic along with new lounges and locker rooms for doctors, nurses and staff. “A hybrid room is a combination operating room that has a lot of imaging capability,” said cardiothoracic surgeon Matthew Wall, M.D., deputy chief of surgery at Ben Taub and executive director of trauma and critical care. He is also a professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. “You can bring a patient up there, do a CAT scan of their head, do a CAT scan of their body, do an open operation, a catheter-guided operation,” Wall explained, noting the technology eliminates patient transfers between the emergency center and the operating room. The renovated space replaces an outpatient specialty clinic that was “a waiting area from end-to-end and 80 exam rooms,” said Jason Kunnacherry, vice president of operations at Ben Taub. In 2017, that clinic was transferred to the adjacent “Old Ben Taub,” as the original hospital building is known. “The beauty of being able to move everything over there was we had an almost completely vacant second floor to work with,” Kunnacherry said. “After evaluating, we determined we needed seven additional operating rooms, support spaces, a larger blood bank to handle the new volume of patients and incorporate new technology, central sterile processing and new equipment.” Previously, the 444-bed Ben Taub had 11 surgical suites that were about 400-square-feet each. The new operating rooms, 18 in all, are twice as large. “For us, it is certainly something that is long overdue being a Level 1 trauma center,” said Sharon Land, the hospital’s administrative director of nursing. “From the time Ben Taub opened, we were under-spaced for [operating rooms] and we were not able to meet all of the patient needs because of the small footprint.” Land estimates the hospital handles 10,000 surgeries annually ranging from routine orthopedic and cardiac interventions to unexpected trauma procedures for patients injured in vehicle accidents or by firearms. The new space will allow for about 6,600 more surgeries each year. The $70 million project provides the necessary expansion of operative suites and supporting services on the second floor to support Level 1 trauma services at Ben Taub Hospital. The construction of 7 new rooms will be completed in 2019, with the projected opening in September. Most of the purchasing commitments for construction and equipment have already been made. The remaining bond project fund at November 30, 2018, is $39.7 million, reflecting the remaining expected cash outflows to complete the OR project, with any remaining funds to be used for the Ben Taub Emergency Center renovation project. Renovation of Ben Taub Emergency Center: The architectural and engineering planning has begun to modernize and renovate the emergency center at Ben Taub Hospital. This project is the next step in the continuing effort to improve emergency and trauma services at Ben Taub.
