nativehoustonion
I remember when Kathy Whitmire wanted to build the convention center. There was nothing on the east side of downtown. Hard to believe how it all transformed. There yesterday with a friend from Dallas that grew up in Houston. He just could not believe it how downtown has transformed. When to the Greek Festival and had a very good time.

I would argue that it was Disco that was the real catalyst for this area however and that was, what?, 2004?. Regardless, It shows you just how long it takes to fix cities that become broken. Once it is lost, it may be lost for a decade or 4 decades. To keep a city vibrant, the old must be somehow made new and sometimes that means demolition. However, flattening half of a city all at once because you dream of some workers utopia all connected with moving indoor and air conditioned sidewalks so no human ever has to have the sun in his eyes is likely never a good idea. now, turn your eyes to Detroit. Are you 25 right now or 55?. If you are 25 you might live to see Detroit rebuilt into something fantastic. 55? You might live long enough to see the beginning of the change. Popular Post Nole23
Just drove by and they had a bunch of lights on inside. There's a huge chandelier on the second floor on the corner of Crawford and Walker visible from the street. Sorry for the poor pic as it does not do it justice. I used Detroit as a metaphor, but, to your point, I agree, lots of new stuff going on despite many existing buildings being empty and lots of vacant lots were commerce once stood. downtown Detroit was in its heyday likely right after WWII. By 1970 it was hollowing out. By 2000 is was largely gone. Let's say that a lot of savvy, forward thinking developers continue the trend that may have now started, how long until Detroit again approaches the city it was in 1947? Your answer may legitimately vary from mine but I say "a long, long, long time" --- several generations.

I use it a lot for landscapes and astrophotography out at the beach. So I notice they still haven't glassed over the southwestern corner on the top two floors. Ive been trying to figure out for a while now if those will be balconies, but haven't gotten a response. Balconies weren't shown in the original renderings, but if that is now the plan, does anyone know what rooms the balconies would connect to? Penthouses? The top floor looks like it has a taller ceiling, maybe a public space of some sort? Should be some great views from there..
