Does anyone know the history of Jensen Square - 9191 Jensen (Google street view)

I'd love to see photos. For years I've been hearing stories about The Granada Movie Theater, T&L Restaurant, Prince's Drive In and even a bowling alley. It's such a shame that the area (now) is a dump.

Back when I was a kid in the mid/late 60's and very early 70's the Jensen Drive area was the shopping area for the north side. Jensen Square was home to a grocery store called Foodland (its competition was Food Giant, just across Aldine-Westfield Road from it). The center had a fire circa 1969 that was at the east end of the center that destroyed one store and smoeke/water damaged several others. T&L was a nice little diner that my family ate at often. It was similar to The Dot down at Gulfgate now. I think the center dates from the 1950's.

The fact the place is still standing is a miracle in and of itself. The only store still part of the Jensen strip era is the Firestone store at Berry Rd and Jensen Dr. Everything else died out over a generation ago.

Fond memories of this area. I was from out of town, but my future wife lived nearby. We had our first date at the Granada in November of 1958. We used to drag Jensen Drive and frequent Prince's. I was from a small town and this was like the "wild" side to me. Seems "tame" today.

I was born & raised off Homestead Rd. I just went there and saw the house I lived in when I was about 3 yrs old the place and street look the same. Homestead Rd a different story trashy and a dump. My grandfather was murder in 1979 at the Weingarten's Grocery Store off Homestead & Tidwell. There is a Super grocery store there now. That was my stomping ground with alot of memories. We moved off S.Post and Hiram Clarke when I was 10. Left there age 33 to live on coast of Mississippi. Now I live in the mountains of E. TN. I miss my childhood and teenage years. But I would not want to live there now way too big and too populated for me. There is a facebook page called Houston History with alot of pictures posted and the good ole' old days of Houston posted. I invite you to join us.

My daughter says I am getting old to want to relive my young years. I tell her its not old its nostalgia.
