Houston #1 city for IT jobs...

Recommended Posts

CIO Magazine has ranked Houston as the #1 city in the country for IT jobs, due largely to the boost provided by the oil price boom and other industries such as healthcare and finance.

Here's the full slideshow/article: http://www.cio.com/a...IT_Jobs_in_2011

A caveat: Other, similar-sounding lists published by CIO (and available by link through the above-linked page) indicate that Houston is NOT the tops. It's either inconsistency - or different measures/methods. Anyway... for now...

With the price of crude oil hovering around $100 per barrel, it's no surprise that the energy industry is booming—and hungry for IT talent. The "Oil Capital of the World" (or at least of the U.S.) is the No. 1 city for IT jobs.

The strength of the IT job market in Houston is bolstered by hiring activity in two other bustling industries: healthcare and financial services.

The IT jobs in greatest demand in Houston are Java and .NET developers; Windows, Linux and Unix systems administrators; project managers; and business analysts. Companies in the area are also seeking IT pros with SAP and Oracle (ORCL) skills.

Here's the full list:

1. Houston

2. Washington

3. Columbus

4. Detroit

5. Philadelphia

6. Edison

7. Boston

Cool, I'm not sure if it was the same publication or not, but sometime within the past year we were also ranked number one. Nice to hear some consistency.

I'm a .NET and Java guy. I'd be curious to know what companies are actually hiring in these fields. I know my company isn't looking for many new developers right now.
