Three outstanding houses will be open for touring. The houses are presently available for purchase. They are located near the central and East end of the island. This is a free event. 43 Cedar Lawn Circle, Galveston, Texas 77551 Cedar Lawn Subdivision Frank Sinatra recommended Palm Springs architect E. Stewart Williams to his friend Sam Maceo, Galveston club and casino operator. The result is this landmark modern house, one of the areas most important architectural treasures. Completed in 1951 in Galveston's desirable Cedar Lawn neighborhood, it was intended for Maceo's young family as well as entertaining friends like Sinatra, Bob Hope, George Burns, Peggy Lee, Jimmy Dorsey and Phil Harris, among others. The landscape and interior design plans were completed by nationally famous designers Garrett Eckbo and T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. The expansive house is centered around an amoeba shaped swimming pool and lush gardens. Over 6,000 square feet of living space includes eight to eleven bedrooms and nine full bathrooms plus two half bathrooms. Floors are travertine and flagstone. Cabinetry of American black walnut and birds-eye maple is found in most rooms. The exterior is redwood and brick. The walled lot is over one acre in size. HAR Link 58 Cedar Lawn Circle, Galveston, Texas 77551 Cedar Lawn Subdivision The flamboyant and spacious Woody and Joila Walker House, built in 1946 with a combination of angular and circular designs, is one of Galveston's most unique vintage homes. Beautiful wood walls and ceilings grace much of the lower floor living area. The den has a full glass wall that overlooks the lap pool and spa. There is a room with a bar off the den. This residence is located in the lushly landscaped Cedar Lawn subdivision which is listed on the national register of historic places. The Galveston Architecture Guide states Mr. Walker was manager of one of the Maceo clubs. The house was designed by Michael A. Loomis and built by his brother Gus Loomis in a style termed Mexican ranchero moderne. HAR Link 1310 Harbor View, Galveston, Texas 77550 Harbor View 1 Subdivision W. Irving Phillips designed this house in 1960 for Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pauls, Jr. while working for architect Thomas Greacen II. The principal rooms are on the second floor to provide better views of the near-by Galveston harbor. Floor to ceiling windows throughout are distinctive features of this iconic mid-century modern house. A boldly designed sunscreen protects the west facing front wall of glass in tribute to Parisian modern architect Le Corbusier. Also on the second floor is a half-bathroom, a large built-in china cabinet, and built-in shelving and cabinets. The parquet floors have recently been restored. The master suite and an office are located in a separate wing. The foyer, three bedrooms, two baths, a dressing room/laundry, and storage room are located on the first floor.
