Thanks to the Greater Greenspoint Redevelopment Authority, the empty land at the corner of Rankin Road and Kuykendahl Road near Interstate 45 will be transformed into a 10-acre park with a skate park as its centerpiece.

The skate park should take up about half of the 10-acre site, which will be called the Spring Recreational Area. The other half will include a “park without limits” called Dylan’s Park. It will be for people of all ages who have special needs.

Early stages of the 50,000- to 60,000-square-foot skate park’s design include public art elements, partial shading of skate surfaces and use of strategic landscaping to enclose the park’s perimeter instead of fences or walls.

The park will be open during set hours and have management and 24-hour security on site.

“The people at the skate park downtown said they often have 300 kids at a time there during the summer,” Bradford said. “Our park will be about two times the size of theirs, so we can only imagine how many kids we will have.”

The project will enter the final design phase in May, go out for bids in October and break ground in January 2011.

“It should be an eight- to ninth-month construction schedule, so we hope to have it up and running by 2012,” Bradford said.

Along with the cost of the land, the overall project should cost between $7 and $8 million. The group has already secured funding. Bradford said the skate park is well worth the money and is sure it will not go underused.

This is such a great idea! The area is in need of something like this. I'm glad people actually see Greenspoint's potential. Beautiful trees and lots of land available, close proximity to the airport, highrises, etc... I can't wait for its completion...

Looks like they're finally breaking ground on this. Several tracktors and trucks clearning grass and leveling the dirt.

Scratch that. Wrong corner. They're clearing land on the SE corner of Rankin & Rushcreek, but the skate park will be on the SW corner.

"We're taking one other big step forward in that we're going to be the largest competition skate park in the country," Mayor Parker said.

The new park comes with five pools mixed with hand rails, stairs, ditches and banks.

The park will be officially complete in April 2014.

10-acre Greenspoint site soon to be transformed into the state’s largest skate park on one side, with a showcase facility for special needs children on the other side.

Capable of hosting world-class competitions and exhibitions, the skate park will be the perfect complement to downtown’s Lee and Joe Jamail Skate Park, and just the ingredient needed to turn recreational facilities into economic opportunities.

With 72,000 square feet of skate surface, the skate park will cater to the young and young-at-heart. The unique design includes a world-class competition-scale Texas bowl featuring a full pipe, 12-foot vert ramp, 10-foot bowl, banked walls and speed hips, plus a couple of backyard-style pools and three beginner/intermediate/advanced flow bowls. A section designed to emulate the street-skating experience will have ledges, rails, benches, banks, quarter pipes and stair obstacles, providing fun and creative challenge for skaters of all levels and interests.

A second aspect to the recreational complex, the park without limits, is generating excitement in the world of special needs youth. Called Dylan’s Park, after an area child who was severely injured and later died from child abuse, this section of the facility will have areas designed to engage children who are sight impaired, hearing impaired, autistic or wheelchair-bound. Dylan’s Park will also include open grassy areas for unstructured play, and the facility will be completely fenced.

The entire facility’s $5.5 million price tag also provides for walking trails and a community center. Maintenance will be handled by the Greenspoint District, which maintains other parks developed by the Greenspoint Redevelopment Authority. The District and the Authority are also working together, with other public and private sources, to create a system of trails connecting the area’s parks to Greens Bayou.

It's really hard to get excited about a skate park. Houston seems big on filling empty spaces with parks these days. Big whoopti whoo!

Well, Houston is doing a good job.

Green space is certainly good for quality of life.

in total acreage, Houston has a lot of land dedicated to parks, it shouldn't be surprising when you consider the size of George Bush Park alone is 7800 acres.

Lots of nice small parks help keep things interesting.

Really? I would actually think the east side is better. It has a lot more businesses.

The east side is far better from a corporation stand point, but it also has more residential, and the mall. Most of the "gunspoint" antics happen east of I-45. Or, it did when I was more involved in that area 12+ years ago.

Weird that a project of this scale hasn't made going up, but with it being near Greenspoint I'm not surprised. This is well into construction and actually is supposed to be finished August 16th.

In 2016 Houston was selected to host the BMX World Championships, but we didn't have a facility to host, so instead we built one, of course! Really neat project outside the loop. Because of its size and importance I thought it was "going up" material.

If you are a BMX or skateboarder this will definitely be your thing. This is located on Greens Bayou. Really awesome project.

Developer: Greater Greenspoint Redevelopment Authority

Architect: Endrestudio + Office of James Burnett

Budget: $26,000,000

Estimated Completion: August 16, 2019

When Houston was selected to host the 2020 UCI BMX World Championships in 2016, it was seen as opportunity for the city to earn international recognition in the world of extreme sports. The only trouble was that the facility where the BMX Championship would be held didn’t yet exist.

But after nearly four years of work, the North Houston Bike Park is nearing completion. City leaders have picked Aug. 16 as the park’s official opening date.

OJB Landscape Architecture was tapped by the Greater Greenspoint Redevelopment Authority to design the park. The design team also included California-based Endrestudio. Houston’s Walter P. Moore served as civil engineer, with additional engineering consultation by Houston-based Wylie Consulting Engineers.

The 20-acre, $26 million park is located at the intersection of Interstate 45 and Kuykendahl Road. The park is adjacent to the North Houston Skatepark, the largest skatepark in North America.

Once open, the park will have facilities capable of seating up to 3,500 spectators and feature an array of BMX-approved race tracks, freestyle amenities and street courses. The park will also include a community events center.

The course is expected to draw cyclists from across the country, as well as from abroad, who are looking for a world-class place to train for the X-Games and other competitions. The park will also be open to bikers of all skill levels or those just looking to enjoy the trails.

That's cool. I've never been on that little stretch of Kuykendahl. Always turned on Rankin. Wonder whatever happened to that little amusement park that was on Rankin? Maybe they could turn Greenspoint Mall into the world's largest indoor skatepark, where skateboarders can fulfill all their fantasies of cruising all over the mall and jumping off the benches, etc. They could even bring back the old water features there. Most likely when the area gets strong enough it will be demolished and something like the TI campus redevelopment in Stafford will happen there.
