Google Earth US City Skylines

Recommended Posts

Today's a slow day at work, so I decided to use it to check out Google Earth. After getting comfortable with it, I decided to check out various US city skylines. I've created a 'tour' of the ones I visited and thought some of you might like to see it. I've posted the .kmz file on Google Docs here for public access. I can't figure out how to set it up so that it automatically tours so you'll have to click on each city's name after expanding the menu tree on the left side. I'm sorry this isn't terribly sophisticated (on my part -- the technology is pretty outstanding IMO). To view this, you'll need Google Earth; if you don't have it, you can download it here.

Each of the cities has a placemark with the following standard settings for easier comparison -- Range: 8042m; Tilt: 52ยบ. I chose the heading on each to try to best represent the city's skyline. For example, given the spread of Houston's skyscrapers I chose to focus on the area encompassing both DT and TMC. In its image, you can see Greenway Plaza and Uptown towards the top edge. Similarly for NYC, I focused on midtown and downtown Manhattan.

The tour begins in Boston. It then moves southward roughly along the east coast (NYC, Philly, Washington, Atlanta, Miami). It then moves over to Houston, after which it focuses on other Texas cities (San Antonio, Austin, Dallas). It then shifts to Chicago then Minneapolis. A westward plane trip then takes it to Seattle, after which it moves south to San Francisco and Los Angeles. No offense to those who might like to see some other cities such as Phoenix and New Orleans; no particular reason for their exclusion except my personal choice.

Please note that I didn't create any of the models on this tour. I wish I had that sort of skill, but I don't... ph34r.gif

I hope you all enjoy this. If anyone has any suggestions for its improvement, please post them below - or just modify the file, upload it somewhere and provide us with the link.

Edit: Please be sure to have '3D buildings' checked, or the tour won't be very interesting. cool.gif

I dont have google earth but I dont see any images either. :(

Well, I didn't want to spam the forum with images. But, I guess I'll post these. I apologize ahead of time if posting these images violates some written or unwritten rule. If so, please let me know.

They look much better IN Google Earth, though, I think...
