The Houston Food Bank is already feeding 137,000 people in 18 counties each week through over 400 charities, and handling 60 million pounds of food per year. But this bank is about to get even bigger.

In 2011, the Food Bank’s warehouse operations will be moved to a much larger facility in east Houston. The Houston Food Bank purchased the former Sysco Foods headquarters, which, after the extensive renovation that starts in August, will make the Houston Food Bank the largest in volume in the United States. The $15 million transaction means that the space currently occupied by the food bank will be quadrupled. The expansion will allow the Houston Food Bank to double its food distribution capacity by 2018.

The new facility, designed by RdlR Architects, Inc. and built by Tellepson, includes a volunteer center, community rooms and a cafe to make the experience more enjoyable and lure people back on a regular basis and serve as a launching point for more community projects and volunteerism. Additional community services range from nutrition education to assistance with food stamp applications and hands-on job training.

The Houston Food Bank has cultivated partnerships with numerous public, private and non-profit member agencies, who will be merging forces together and are developing new programs providing education, training, and employment opportunities to various client groups (trustees with the Texas Department of Justice, probationers, low income families, etc.). The new building will provide classroom space needed for various classes such as warehousing, refrigeration, facility management, truck driving and repair, facility management and others.
