DrLan34
I saw that Cafe Layal was opening up in Midtown next to Lemon Tree, off of Gray. They have a pretty cool location on Richmond although I'm not into smoking hookah, the food and atmosphere is pretty cool. I am pretty sure it's the same chain... http://www.cafelayalgrill.com/
DrLan34
cafe layal has a new variance request up. Part up of it is to enhance the pedestrian environment around the propoerty. I heard it includes landscaping and 15' sidewalks, exactly what we need in the area if it comes to fruition.
TonyM
Thank god, hope it goes through. The sidewalk from the edge of Front Porch's property to Helena St is practically non-existent. And Helena itself is a complete pit, that road needs a serious rebuild.
Chi-Char-Hou-Dal
When I saw this post I figured Cafe Layal was closing down. I live close and it is pretty dead on most nights. Nice place, I've been and enjoyed it but something is off on the set-up / interior. Glad to see the improvements and maybe I need to give it another shot! rci2145
That place and Majorka need a renovation. I have no idea how Majorka stays open. I've been there twice for HH and my gf and I were the only ones there both times. Decent food but awful drinks and the decor is beyond cheesey. Purdueenginerd
Majorica is awful. Service is slow. Been there a few times and I always leave irritated.
kbates2
I live right by Majorca. I had never seen more than 6 or 7 people there at a time before this weekend. I decided to try it out on Sunday. Holy God. The place had so many people that they basically fashioned us a table out of spare parts. kylejack
I went to Cafe Layal to smoke a hookah the other day. It was fun and took me back to 1999 or so. Interior of the place is kind of bland, in my opinion, but hey, I had fun.
DrLan34
This is pretty badass. Looks like they will be improving the pedestrian area along Gray/Helena and possibly the area in front of the Majorca...
Nole23
All of the restaraunts and bars near Gray yesterday were PACKED since there was nice weather and tons of people walking around. Cafe Layal seemed to be the only place to not really have that many people.

Nole23
Yea they had live music on the patio of Majorca where a lot of people were also.
DrLan34
It is clear from the latest drawings that the pedestrian enhancements will start on the west side of Front Porch, and will expand across Majorca and Cafe Layal (as well as to the side of Cafe Layal). The planned West Gray Plaza to the west of Cafe Layal will have the same building line as Post Midtown, etc, with parking in the back. Then we have the Modern Midtown going in behind West Gray Plaza. Then farther down past Junction, we should see Dolce Living (7 story apartment complex if you include the facade that will cover mechanical equipment) being added to West Gray soon. Turning into a legitimate walking area. Edited March 14, 2013 by DrLan34
ChrisPHous
That is nice that they incorporated the entire area, meaning the sidewalk going behind Layal, because what exists now is a poor excuse for any walking path.

Slick Vik
All of the restaraunts and bars near Gray yesterday were PACKED since there was nice weather and tons of people walking around. Cafe Layal seemed to be the only place to not really have that many people. The reason is because Majorca has salsa dancing on Wednesdays and a salsa dancing school called Strictly Street Salsa meets there on Wednesday evenings. Otherwise I never see anyone at Majorca except at brunch sometimes.
DrLan34
This Thursday will have the last hearing on the pedestrian improvements. I called the contractor and just confirmed, improvements will include enhancements along Majorca as well.

TonyM
put me in my coffin. sounds so boring. Perhaps so but if you saw the condition of sidewalks (where they exist) on that corner you'd realize that this is a welcome improvement.
