I noticed that they've opened Louisiana Fried Chicken and Seafood across the street from the McDonald's at Fannin/Gray.  Looks like fast food, but it adds some diversity to the dining options currently available on that side of the rail.

Anyone can stop by on their way to Club Houston!

Anyone remember anything about a sports lounge at 3704 Fannin?  I saw something called "The Vanderbilt" on swamplot from back in 2014, but I don't think anything ever happened (based on their facebook page last being updated in 2014).

Anyway, was searching the permit site (cuz ya know HAIF) and there was a permit sold for this address last week for a parking variance...use is "CNVERT REST TO CLUB / ADD 3RD FL 1-3-3-A"; owner listed as FAT property.

Idk.  Anyone seen any work here?

From Cody on swamplot "Until the city government gets over its hard on for cars and parking, these problems are going to persist.

.

We have a commercial property in midtown that’s seen its opening delayed by MONTHS as we work on parking. And this place will only be open at night (when street parking around isn’t used much). It’s surrounded by new residential (meaning lots of people will walk there). There is a light rail stop just a few feet away (less need for cars). They’ve secured several valet spots around it. And it’s a few minutes from the existing dense walkable montrose/midtown.

.

The hang up now? The city wants yet MORE parking before they can open. The tenants secured a lot that’ll give them the extra spots they need but it’s 50 or so feet too far from the building to be considered.

.

Why is the city involved in this at all? If they don’t secure the parking the ‘need’ (based on market demand) they’ll have fewer customers. But if they’re customers don’t care about the parking, why should the city?

.

This kind of stuff just encourages the car culture by insisting people support it. There are so many cool concepts that could be opened if the city didn’t demand so much paved wasted parking"

http://www.chron.com/business/real-estate/article/Randalls-to-expand-Midtown-store-7378514.php?cmpid=twitter-desktop

The Randalls grocery chain wants to expand its 14-year-old store in Midtown and is seeking variances from the city's development code to make substantial changes to the property.

The grocer is asking the city to approve zero-foot building setbacks along Louisiana and Webster, as well as to remove the "visibility triangle" requirement at that intersection to match the reduction in building setbacks.

As part of the changes, Randalls has proposed upgrades to the pedestrian areas along the two roads, including new sidewalks, trees and installing a "green screen" on the facade of the building expansion.

Honestly it's one of the least suburban feeling grocery stores I've been to.  It has an under ground parking garage, minimal surface parking, and has a smaller feel than most grocery stores do now a days.  It doesn't have a shopping cart escalator or 0' setbacks, but its much more urban than say the HEB on W. Alabama, which has a huge parking lot that stretches to the horizon

wish they would revamp the entire store. i hate the suburban feel of that place.

Sounds like they're already at least addressing some of the 0' setbacks, though that seems to be more the fault of outdated city rules than anything they did. What would make it more "urban"? Does it need to be more crowded...or more grungy? (It should be noted that there are numerous unquestionably urban stores in San Francisco, New Jersey, Washington DC, and Chicago that DO have surface parking)

...or were you complaining that it looks too much like every other Randalls store in the city, which is more the result of brutal homogenizing in the late 2000s?

I wish there were stairs from the parking garage to the inside, rather than the elevator that takes 5 minutes to use. that and they suck at keeping the place stocked.

and now there's no more self checkout.

This looks cool, but the people in the first rendering would technically be walking from the greyhound station...

They might be.  The guy on the right in the blue coat is walking barefooted while holding his shoes in his hand.  Looks exactly like he is coming from the Greyhound station.

Beat me to it...

I wonder where. And if this will really just attract the clientele of the "Midtown Lodge"...

Or why we needed 4 photos of the entrepreneur by the light rail.

The Sausage & Boudin Shack (3610 Reed Rd) has expanded operations into Midtown.
BBQ, Soul Food, sandwiches, fried fish plates, etc.
2111 Fannin (inside the Texaco Service Station across from the Greyhound station).

Got some oxtail, yams, rice, and cornbread last night - Good food, good price!
It's located in a corner of the convenience store in the Texaco station. Not glamorous to begin with, and some sketchy charactors....you might want to get it 'to go', or better yet, they deliver.
Definitely going again.

"Deidre Mathis is planning a hostel near the McGowen Metro stop. "They're going to feel like they're in Houston," she says."

Curious as to what building is both suitable as a hostel and close to the McGowen station. There aren't that many to choose from.

Greensheet brings you buyers.

That's a good slogan. So was "Let your fingers do the walking thru the Yellow Pages".

i dont know the last time I even picked up a green sheet. They need to just hurry up and go out of business.

I'm  mystified as to how they've lasted this long. Their main function now seems to be to provide litter at bus stops.
I do like the building, and hope it will be repurposed.

1506 Truxillo.  Took me a while to confirm the location noted on Google, so they truly are "under the radar."  I'm excited that this is a 5 minute bike ride from me.

http://www.khou.com/news/local/new-midtown-bar-has-historic-roots/282986372

It's usually out with the old and in with the new when it comes to decades old buildings in Houston.

But one business owner has decided to preserve a piece of history in Midtown by turning a historic house into a bar—called Sterling House.

Sterling House officially opens to the public Aug. 6.

Midtown is definitely one of the hottest neighborhoods in Houston. It's been in-demand since the early 2000's because of it's combination of nightlife, trendy restaurants, and retail shopping. We think it's the perfect place for people who love urban atmospheres!

Midtown is improving, with plans to open new shops and build new real estate, plus the addition of Midtown Park.
