Midtown Restaurant And Bar Scene - More Coming

Do yourselves a favor and grab some late night food at Rico's in the midtown park. Seriously impressed last night, and open till 3am should do good business.

I wasn't impressed by the look of the menu when I walked by. Mainly burgers and dogs... I guess I was hoping one something more unique. I was interested in trying their breakfast tacos given they are affiliated with Cyclone Anaya's. Will give dinner a shot though.

Could there be a more quintessentially HAIF restaurant review?  ;-)

Ok, now for a real review of Rico's since i actually ate there. Went Saturday morning around 9, and took our time there. For the hour or so I was there, most of the tables where full and several people came and went. Mostly young people (20's), several with dogs just hanging out having breakfast. There was a group of 4 guys that got beers with their food.

Breakfast tacos were all solid. The potatoes i think were just their fries but cut up and cooked a little longer, it worked really well. Chorizo and bacon were good too. A little pricey for the size (i ate 3) but I guess for the location, you're paying a little for convenience assuming you are just walking there. Though I can walk to La Mexicana about the same distance away which I prefer (killer carnitas).

I assume when I try the burger it will be after 2am, so it will most likely have a very favorable and biased review.

I went Saturday evening after checking out the BBP grand opening. I hadn't eaten since lunch, so I was somewhat ravenous. Maybe because I was so hungry, I was expecting just a bit more, but the burger patty, which is kind of an important thing, I felt was undersized. Flavor was good, it was juicy, so that was good, I got the bacon burger, and the bacon was bacon, so that was good. The fries were just a little on the crunchy side, which I like, so that was actually better than just good.

Overall, it was an ok burger, everything was good, a little above actually, but not outstanding, and the patty was small, so yeah, just ok. I won't seek them out when there are better burgers very nearby, but I also won't vote against them if my friends want to go there. They will do well just based on their location and serving beer, especially in the great outdoors months.

That they are doing the local thing gives them points in my book as well.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but there's a non-profit called ESCAPE that bought the boarded-up building at 2410 Hamilton.  Looks like they have a lot of after-hours classes and events so hopefully this will be good for the area.  I just wish they would freshen up the exterior.

Looks like they missed their opening...

funny, not funny, but they should change the countdown clock to a count up clock.

must be their first time building a space, it's easy to be overly optimistic. We opened our coffee shop nearly 6 months after we had expected to. Next time we do a thing, we will have more realistic expectations.

It was worth it.  Yours is hands down the best place for coffee on campus or to hang out and get some work done.  Hard to find a seat sometimes, though.

A cigar lounge in under construction at Main Square, in the center where Vietnamese restaurant Saigon House is located. It's called The Cigar Loft at 3109 Main Street. Here are some picture from Instagram:

I didn't realize there were so many Fuzzy's locations. I've eaten there in Longview where my wife is from and also seen it in Nacogdoches and Tyler, just thought it was a smaller chain from east Texas. Its no Torchy's but its a welcome addition. Hopefully it lasts in that spot, and is open late.

To me it seems like they are referring to the northern corner of the central bank block. They had previously planned to build a plaza there, but I guess the MRA has decided to provide funding for it.

"Stacked retail" proposed for Midtown.

The urbanization of retail will continue to gain momentum in Houston in the form of mixed-use projects, according to Streetwise Retail Advisors managing partner Ed Page. That’ll mean a lot of residential over retail projects. In addition, two vertical power centers—a concept that has never been done in this market—are in pre-development in Midtown and the Washington Avenue/Heights area.

Short definition of the concept:

The Vertical Power Center: Prototype Development

An emerging building type comprised solely of big box retail, the Vertical Power Center is unlike the suburban shopping mall and other shopping center types. Lacking the connective public tissue of the latter, the Vertical Power Center is a laminated organization of individual retailers, requiring complete autonomy among their operations. Each retailer requires its own parking, HVAC, vertical conveyance, and structural template. The Vertical Power Center is more infrastructural than architectural, as independent buildings, rather than floors, are stacked.
