(a) the post was spam/rude

(b ) the post was not spam at all and it only got the -50 because of maliciously evil and cruel members

It's always A. Most of the time.

Does option (b ) actually exist outside of junior high?

I've been seeing well thought out post given negative reps (I just rep the people back up). Doesn't make sense. Unless the person is attacking you or something, why negative rep it? It sounds like your opinion of the post differs from another person's opinion of the post. That doesn't mean the system is broken.

Unless the person is attacking you or something, why negative rep it? Don't negative rep if you disagree with someone. If you agree, yeah.

I think the positive/negative system might end up filtering out a lot of the snarky one-liners from people who disagree with a post, and also make the needless "Ditto" answers unnecessary. Hopefully in the long run it will make the quality of the threads better because pointless one-liners will become a thing of the past.

All I did was express my opinion and that's what I get.

And apparently not everyone agrees with your opinion. Just as you have the right to voice your opinion through words, they have the right to voice their opinion through pressing the red minus button.

You are welcome to have that opinion. However, you have to realize that in a community of tens of thousands of people, not everyone is going to agree with you.

People have "HAIF" meet ups all the time. Personally, I went to high school with a HAIFer. Bought items from a HAIFer. Adopted out my house cat to a HAIFer's girlfriend. And met "Editor" in Chicago a few weeks ago.

A bunch of my HAIF friends are also my facebook friends.

I am sure I am not alone on this either.

I think I see the trend here, the younger HAIFers are really caught up in the ratings and the rest of us don't care. Probably because we didn't spend out youths living out our lives on facebook and twitter and other online social whatever. The trick is to acquire brown liquor and drink it.

The problem wasn't so much that people couldn't handle having negative reputation so much as it was that some people abused the power to give negative reputation.

Rarely do I disagree with any decisions you make, since it is YOUR system, however I think this is one of those decisions that simply could have waited awhile longer.

I checked on a couple of people who were unhappy with the system as it was, and I really think people would be very surprised if they knew who was voting them down and up.

Of course, if I released that sort of information it would be chaos around here, so I think I'll disable the function.

In controversial topics (politics and religion, etc): if a person makes a post that is a reasonable post with nothing wrong with it, but it expresses views that you don’t like, don’t downvote it. That’s just petty.

I agree, and for the most part, if there is something that I am particularly for or against, I use the button. I don't like typing one or two word sentences for a post and the like and dislike buttons is a lazy man's (me) way of doing a post, but showing where I stand.

There are several criteria by which posts can be ranked. A post may contain little useful content, yet I might find it perceptive and funny.

Some replies are just plain mean. They might not violate terms of service, but detract from a civil exchange of ideas.

My favorite posts contain significant content. I appreciate HAIFers who have done their homework, and post well researched, educational comments, as opposed to "Me, too" or "Hmm" replies.

I don't envy that you have many options for ranking systems from which to decide. As someone remarked earlier, there have been posts with which he disagrees, yet respects how well the opinions were expressed.

I'd like to hear what options you're exploring.
