I just drove by a bit ago and the flames were incredibly high! i probably saw it just after the roof collapsed. I am more worried about the store that has quite a few Elvis items!

How does a place like that burn to the ground? Maybe they're staging it to get out of that crap neighborhood

Mattress Mac will be just fine. He managed to get a plug in for his new store at the Post Oak location.

He is a good man. When my mother's house burned down in 2002, we went there to buy her a new bed. When I mentioned that her house had burned, the salesman grilled us to be sure that she had insurance and was in a position to be able to afford her new bed. He asked several times if we were sure she didn't need any help (in a nice unobtrusive manner). I could tell that if the answer had been negative they would do something for her.

Years before that, a group for which I am a member was doing a raffle to help a halfway house. With no questions asked, he donated a living room full of new furniture.

I will always remember that.

This is indeed sad.

From what I've heard on the news a generator burst into flames, and the warehouse workers were able to put it out, or so they thought... the flames came back and were more than could be fought with fire extinguishers. Currently a 4 alarm blaze now.

So far the warehouse is a complete loss but the showroom isn't burning... but I'm sure there is massive smoke damage

Holy Crap! Those pictures are incredible! I was watching the Astros and then clicked on this thread and turned on the News. WOW! There are throngs of people watching from the surrounding streets.

Right now they say that it's contained to the warehouse and hasn't spread to the store itself.

Mack told 13 that the Post Oak location will be open at 9AM tomorrow. He says he's not promising same day delivery. Very clear about the ops.

Mack also reports that there are firewalls between the warehouse and showroom. His daughter, standing next to him (apparently supporting him), reports smoke billowing out of the showroom. He looked pale.

I know he's insured. Still, I feel for him. Business people build their lives around their businesses. This kind of injury is not easy.

Firefighters are battling a four-alarm blaze at a Gallery Furniture warehouse next to the main store on I-45 North. The fire, which broke out at about 8:40, has created a traffic tie-up on the freeway as an increasing number of emergency vehicles respond

How they reported it 8 is some helluva precognitive voodoo I'd like to learn.

It was not on the website of 11, 2, 13, or Chron when i posted 25 minutes later. It was on fox, i noticed after i posted.

Regardless... i thought it very breaking news worthy.. so piss off.

So sad. Never bought anything from them but im a native houstonian and grew up with matress mac. Dont know if any of yall saw him on Dr. Phil with his OCD daughter, but I had a new respect for him after that. Bottom line is he loves Houston, and has done so much for our great city.

I had seen it before 9(a few mins...!?) on fox because the place i work at was still open(we close at 9)The chron had it on around 930 pm ish . the not very "breaking news worthy" was for the MEDIA. Did you watch how Fox showed it? Firefighters said they are ...Firefighters said...If they plan to interupt a show atleast get some stuff planned out. Mike couldn't even speak right! That's what i meant. There was nothing in my post directed to you for the "piss off" comment. Since you posted in crater houston i'd figure you didn't like the massive circus looking building as much as i did :)

Granted i know people personally who have gotten free WHOLE house furniture thanks to him so. So i know his generosity i just didn't like how he was to his staff.

Does anyone know if the fire has spread to the showroom?

I heard that only smoke got into the showroom.

The Chron reports that Mack was filiming a new ad this morning to remind people about the Post Oak location.

It's kind of cold how the Chronicle has an Ashley Furniture advertisement popup on the front webpage, directly above a photo of the fire. :(

I was thinking showroom which is mostly empty space, but yeah a warehouse stacked to the ceiling with boxed furniture is going to be unstoppable.

When will business owners learn that auto-sprinklers are your friend?

Does the city require them in storage areas/warehouses?

An old generator and a warehouse FULL of furniture in a struggling economy ? The Perfect Storm, maybe?

Yeah, my cynical side thought that too, especially with him having committed to the new Post Oak location. But these things happen in good times and bad, and I will give Mac the benefit of the doubt. That location is much too lucrative for him. Totally different audience at Post Oak.

Depends on the size but it should be common sense.

I thought that was sort of ironic myself along with the Star and Rooms to Go ads on 13 this morning.

As competitive as the furniture business is, I bet every advo-rep handling a furniture store account had a phone blowing up last night. :P

Does anyone know yet how the blaze started? Mattress Mac is a good guy, and the merchandise I've bought there has always been high quality. Hate to hear this. He has given so much back to this city. Guess that's why we have insurance. I can remember his first commercials, on ch. 39 or 26. My dad & I thought, who is this guy? He's always in the store when we go there, still always working hard. Has spoken to us about British soccer teams, before. Know he loves sports. Hate to see his sports collection damaged.

I heard on the news this morning that the fire was strictly in the warehouse area. A firewall protected the "jewels" in the showroom. Ch 2 actually had Mack on the phone.

Was interesting to read the live-Tweets from their marketing guy on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/gilv

I love this one: "Wow - audacity of people - got a phone call asking if we are giving away damaged furnutre. Wow. That is shockingly bad."

Well, from looking at the various footage from the different stations, from what I've been able to gather was that the generator was located just OUTSIDE of the warehouse fire.

I asked a friend about it and he commented that failures do occasionally happen, but when you have a failure, it's pretty bad, particularly if it gets hot enough for the oil to ignite.

I assume you mean diesel since most generators are fueled by either diesel or natural gas. Looking at the pictures I would be very suprised if the fire started on the exterior of the building.

Mattress Mac is a great guy, but I wouldn't want to be the arsonist alone in the same room with him.

I think that confirms the story that the generator was a very unlikely cause

The paper says that it started in an area that's usually not visited by the public, so my guess would be that they're going to be taking a closer look at all of the employees, no?

I have heard that Mack can be hard to work for at times (he expects everyone to work as hard as he does, obviously), so the disgruntled employee theory makes a bit of sense to me.

I think that Mack tried the tiger bit years ago. Actually it was a lion at his flea market. All was well until a small girl got eaten.

What about Mack himself?

He did recently commit to and open a new location that is much higher end than the I-45 location. But if that were the case, that would be a pretty serious contradiction to the man we have all come to know. Anything is possible, but I highly doubt it. If nothing else, he seems to exhibit great pride of ownership.

This one will be interesting to watch. WHy would anyone want to do such a thing that could not only have injured or killed somebody, but also put so many hard working people out of business. I'm thinking crime of passion rather than premeditated. and if it is a crime of passion (rage), it should be solved pretty quickly.

Anyone notice that the Chron story doesn't have reader comments enabled??? Heh. That's the quid pro quo for buying 1 and 2 full color ads to run ad infinitum.

Unless we start seeing random arson fires at other, similar targets, there seem to be only 2 reasonable explanations: disgruntled employee/customer/competitor, or Mack himself. Maybe this will turn into a big, juicy story with good old-fashioned criminal intrigue. Too bad we can't trust the Chron to report on it fairly.

Also, this was the warehouse that serves both locations. It's the resource for his "buy it t-day, you'll get it t-day" promise.

The very first thing I said to my husband after the fire was that Mac must be trying to drive more traffic to his new location on Post Oak. Evidently I'm not alone in that theory. (But I also think Ken Lay is alive and well in another country with a new face). Also, Gallery Furniture has another warehouse in Sugar Land that they kept referring to on the numerous news reports that the fire generated. At one point, all three local networks were reporting on the fire simultaneously, not to mention the individual interviews with Mac. He could not have purchased this kind of coverage and publicity. And it presents him in a very sympathetic light. Mac is NOT the sweet humble man he presents himself to be, based on many stories I've heard from ex-employees, vendors and even some friends in the media. He might not have struck the match but he could have paid someone else to do it. Stay tuned.......
