So, this one seemed to sneak past everyone's radar -- the media relations bigwigs didn't even know about this at Dallas City Hall when we called this morning, though a Friend of Unfair Park did send word that Norm Hitzges made brief mention of this on KTCK-AM 'round 9:50 this morning. Ten minutes after that, Mayor Tom Leppert and John Crawford, president and CEO of DowntownDallas, were holding a press conference to announce the "formation of a task force whose mission is to bring the College Football Hall of Fame to Downtown Dallas." Specifically, the Hall of Fame would be adjacent to the city-owned convention center hotel ... so, ya know, speaking of ...

Also in on the deal is Tom Hansen, president of TM Advertising, which has created the "Haul the Hall" site to spark interest in the group's efforts -- complete with pretty pictures of models and a petition for signing. Says the press release, "The task force plans to privately raise 100 percent of the necessary funds to build, relocate and launch the new Hall."

...Dallas is interested in bringing a year-round sporting attraction to the central business district: The College Football Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame is currently located in South Bend, Indiana. If Mayor Tom Leppert gets his wish, the museum would move to a city-owned two acre site in the shadow of the downtown convention center.

The mayor unveiled his vision Monday morning with some prominent Dallas business leaders as a part of his task force, including oilman and entrepreneur T. Boone Pickens and former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, now a real estate mogul.

"This is football country; people love football," Staubach said. "It makes sense to bring this here."

Other former Cowboys on the task force include Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith...

"...Say you come in for a vascular surgery convention or whatever it may be; we think it's a great opportunity at three in the afternoon for people to come over and visit the College Football Hall of Fame. They'll be here; it's a great location," Leppert said. "Then think about all the people that come to downtown Dallas on business or for other purposes; it'll be a natural venue for them to come..."

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert is joining Roger Staubach, T. Boone Pickens, Deion Sanders and several others in launching a bid to relocate the College Football Hall of Fame to downtown Dallas...

..."Bringing the College Football Hall of Fame here will be a game changer -- a game changer for the Hall of Fame, a game changer for downtown Dallas," said Leppert.

Leppert said Dallas could offer a higher profile for the museum than South Bend and could boost attendance -- where initial projections estimate 400,000 visitors in the first year.

Additionally, the relocation task force plans to privately raise the money to build, relocate and launch the new hall. The proposal to move the hall has been in the works for a year and the proposed location is adjacent to the controversial city-owned convention center hotel.
