Holiday lights shine on a revitalized downtown

Officials hope the displays draw people and help boost retail growth

Once virtually empty and vaguely menacing, downtown Houston's nighttime streets are being clothed in holiday finery by boosters who hope colorful lights and oversized ornaments will draw people to the business district to visit, shop and possibly live.

While there are festive lights at City Hall and on office buildings throughout the downtown area, this year's decorations will be concentrated on or near Main Street Square, the $7.9 million centerpiece of a downtown remake that features fountains, public art and a brick-paved Main Street.

The three-block-long square and a four-block stretch of Lamar will be illuminated by multicolored lighting displays featuring about 175,000 bulbs. Giant wrapped gift boxes

"Laura Van Ness, Central Houston's director of business development, said she has increasingly seen young couples with children frequenting downtown Houston. District officials see that as a hopeful sign."

Yep, that is what they want, families. I am fine with this as long as they don't plan on putting in a Chuck E Cheese to get them here.

Who thinks Houston needs better lighting at night.

Houston is a big huge and largest for Texas.

Houston downtown is alot to the city with the skyscrapers built in the town.

Houston has a wonderful daylight skyline ever seen in the area than any other city.

Like Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Parts of Manhatten, with the other large cities still are made of skylines from the 1930's and maybe Dallas

Houston Skyline at Night

It is very hard to find a perfect image of Houston all lit up of skyscrapers searching on internet. I have not seen Houston or been there but to believe that when i was in Dallas at night seeing Downtown that it was an mirracle to see such many lighting on all the skyscrapers and especially the BANK ONE CENTER all green all around! WOW

Houston hardly lit up Most seen every night

Dallas lit up this is almost everyday of the year.

Houston Skyline shown online never all the buildings are never lit up I only found one photo with all the skyscrapers lit up.

Houston night skyline should be like this every night.

* Bright Beacon rotating lights on every tall skyscraper in downtown like what you have on the Williams Tower. With White lighting on each roof of all skyscrapers not different colors. EXAMPLE OF DIFFERENT COLORS

THEY SHOULD ADD TENT TO ALL WINDOWS

With blue and red tented windows on the skyscrapers for night time. (REPRESENTING THE TEXAS FLAG COLORS) can you imagine what downtown would look like then at night.

I think Houston skyline is almost ok at night for the most part, but the White Christmas lights on every building doesn't do it any justice. Christmas lights to me just show that the city took absolutely no time in decorating the skyline at night.

Are you guys kidding! Houston's skyline lights are mediocre. You'd think with all the energy in that place that it would look like Las Vegas year round. Even Austin has better lighting. The best skyline in Texas and after nightfall no one even knows it exists!

i was just driving by downtown tonight and noticed that some of the downtown buildings haven't lit up their rooftops with the different colors that they did last year in honor of the Astros. This year they made it to the World Series. I wonder why they didn't do it this year?

OYE  I'm looking at Houston's skyline during Game 3, and I'm thinking of how quiet our city looked in the background. Why do we have to have casinos on a strip to have our lighting downtown shine like Las Vegas's Strip? We're trying to showcase a vibrant downtown, not try to be like any other quiet town.

our skyline does seem dull and tacky. I wish the building owners would take more note of how they're giving a poor appearance of the Houston skyline at night

i'm trying to figure out exactly what you are trying to say here? Are you saying that our skyline shouldn't light up more? Help me out. i'm confused here

I'm saying that five Octobers ago, we lit up downtown with the Power of Houston so nobody but us could see it. Now we got the World Series here, and the World gets to see Downtown in black? It needs to be lit up Power of Houston-style NOW!!!
