Photos: Columbia, South Carolina

Recommended Posts

I spent a little time in Columbia, South Carolina last summer. It's a quiet town. Very typical for a small American city -- a downtown that is slowly undergoing rebirth after decades of neglect, and a wealth of great old architecture. Here are some pictures:

Nice pics, E. I do remember the downtown being rather dead when I was there about 15 years ago. A lot of Government, and not much else. I also remember there being a lot of turtle roadkill on the highways around there.

Funny. I didn't see any turtles on the roads, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Only yesterday did I realize how close Columbia is to Charlotte. It's only about an hour by car. Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston, Florence, Savannah, etc... there's all these medium and large-sized cities across the area like a net, but each is an island. Reminds me a little of Texas that way.

I lived in Columbia for 10 years before moving to Houston in 1980. Once I was here all I heard was "Austin, Austin, that the happening city." Once I finally made it over there I was struck by the similarity of Columbia to Austin. State Capital, university city, military presence, similar population, and large recreational lakes close by. About the only thing Columbia did not have was a Michael Dell.

Looks a little like Houston too with that Sam Houston statue and 5 Houston Center building :lol:
