editor Posted January 24, 2009 Share Posted January 24, 2009 I spent a little time in Columbia, South Carolina last summer. It's a quiet town. Very typical for a small American city -- a downtown that is slowly undergoing rebirth after decades of neglect, and a wealth of great old architecture. I didn't see any turtles on the roads,but I wouldn't be surprised.Only yesterday did I realize how close Columbia is to Charlotte. It's only about an hour by car. Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston, Florence, Savannah, etc... there's all these medium and large-sized cities across the area like a net, but each is an island. Reminds me a little of Texas that way. Once I finally made it over there I was struck by the similarity of Columbia to Austin. State Capital, university city, military presence, similar population, and large recreational lakes close by.
