Jersey01
What do you all know about the Kempner House by Edward Durell Stone that was on Willowick?I've never seen images, plans...anything. This is a spectacular E.D. Stone house in Dallas
sevfiv
Just for reference, it is mentioned in this thread as being in Stephen Fox's Texas Modernism lecture in April 18, 1995:3688 Willowick Road, 1952, Edward Durrell Stone with Thomas E. Greacen, IIThe Houston Architectural Guide has no picture but states:This contemporary style house by the New York architect Edward Durrell Stone-designed prior to his fixation with masonry solar screens-was an important model locally for architects who wanted to go modern but were not willing to commit themselves unreservedly to the precepts of Frank Lloyd Wright or Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The house is not visible from the street.
BenH
I've been trying to track that one down for a while. It evidently wasn't very opulent, not like the Dallas house. More like a ranch house.
BenH
The University of Arkansas Special Collections have Stone's papers. Their curator tells me that they have two black & white photos of the house. I'll see what I can do about getting copies.

sevfiv
Also - the current residence on that lot (built in 2000) is huge (almost 12,000 sq ft) and the appraisal is getting near $10 million

I'm thinking of the Kempner family (Imperial Sugar, right?). Plus, Howard Barnstone did a Kempner house on Del Monte; probably the same family.
