I want one of these (not as portable, though!)

It's great that Central Plaza will get a new lease on life, but I hate that all of these relics that have been inside as well as the interior of the building serving as a kind of time capsule will all end up in a landfill somewhere

I agree. It's almost like the past is being held right up on these floors. With all the new rennovations, they're just going to be thrown out the window.

Maybe they should open up a museum with a few floors dedicated to the each decade. One for the 60s, 70s, and so on. Name it:  PAST PRESENT, and FUTURE right around the block to highlight these historic gems.

Okaaay, now I'm really impressed. Has anyone seen the rendering for the other side of the Central Bank building? It's showing off some really nice retail area. It's clearly something new because I've never seen it before. I was riding my bike at midnight and wasn't able to get a picture but I'll get it next time I ride through unless someone else snags a pic. It's at the corner of Milam and Gray. You can't miss it.. it's a big rendering.

Edit: To clarify, it's a poster board. It's nothing I've seen online.

as I drove by yesterday, I saw a newish rendering of a new facade for the CBB that looks something like the new facade of the Mickey Leland building

Yea that other poster has already been there. Kinda wish the developers would take down this other one that I just posted...

If this is the rendering I'm thinking of, it's been there for a really long time, and was just a rendering of 'what could be' with the for sale sign under it.

I tried to get a better photo but it started to pour down rain.

Not only is this rendering very old.  It is not for (or on) the Central Bank Building property.  As mentioned, this is on the corner of Milam and Gray -- a small one story building that is not part of the Central Bank Building property.

^ Not much external progress. They've simply taken down some of the trees on Travis. Seems to be a slow gutting process compared to the elaborate wooden shoot and the massive amounts of trash being hauled out of the Savoy Hotel.

Houston needs to decide, taking a long-term view, where it wants to put its (seedy) bus station and services for homeless/battered/etc. people.  Back in the day, all of that seemed to be focused where the baseball stadium and convention center are now.  The city pushed to redevelop the area and now the center of those activities has moved a bit further south.

I agree with the idea that continuing to keep those facilities in the middle of things downtown puts a bit of a damper redeveloping the area to attract more people.  In the past, I've heard people argue that the bus and charity facilities need to be close to the nexus for bus lines.  But ... bus lines can be adjusted fairly easily and I'm not convinced that they are key factor, anyway.

Any thoughts on this?

I always thought they should put these places out east near the ship channel. Lots of industrial w/ little to no residents to disturb. Easy access in and out for buses/transit. Almost everything is already fenced to keep people out, so you can make a well-controlled area with better security for everyone.

Now if only someone would find a way to coax Greyhound out of its prime real estate and demo that dumpy McDonalds across from 2016 Main.

That McDonalds exterior is being renovated to the new boxy, rough faced CMU look. It's not going anywhere soon.

The bus station is optimally located next to the rail line and the downtown transit station. Anywhere's else would be a burden on the people who use these services.

The area is perfectly fine in it's current trajectory.

The bus station needs to be centrally located, not out in Magnolia Park.

Maybe out on Harrisburg along the new light rail. Maybe.

But honestly, I think the existing station just needs to be cleaned up or replaced on site, and given better security. Its location makes sense.

No thanks! Eastwood and maybe EaDo would fight that idea off tooth and nail. Besides, the East End already has enough of Houston's "undesirable" type places. Concentrating all them in one place would not be a good idea as suggested by another commenter.
