Rock Concerts 60's 70's 80's

I think I went to every rock concert that came through Houston in the mid 60's thru late 70's except for the Beatles, Hendrix and the Stones.

The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Rascals, Cream, Lead Zepplin, a great performance of Jesus Christ Superstar and brain freeze many more. Loudan Wainwright had a new guy as the opening band name Bruce Springsteen.

Most were held at the Coliseum and a few more intimate (Moody Blues, James Taylor) were held at the Theatre in the Round. Billy Joel (didn't say HARD rock) was at the Music Hall.

I saw the Eagles twice and I think the second time was held at what became the Compac center? It was new & shiny and remember waiting in the long bathroom line when they played Hotel California.

Seperate place! I saw Pink Floyd at the L.A. Coliseum and when they played "Learning to Fly" they had waited for a plane to descend over the coliseum on it way to land at lax. They bounced hot pink lazer beams off the belly of the plane. It was awsome.

Anyone else out there remember any of the concerts?

Oh wow, man. The Animals, The Who, Quicksilver, The Byrds, Chicago, The Elevators and who did InaGadadavida? Iron Butterfly?

And the Catacombs.

I saw ZZTop in a little hole in the wall in Beaumont in maybe 68-69? No long beards yet and we were almost sitting on top of them.

You mentioned the Stones. Were you there that day at the coliseum when they played in 1965? I remember it was $5 general admission. The next time I saw the Rolling Stones (steel wheels, 1989) I shelled out $150.

At several of those concerts in the coliseum, I walked a 16mm camera past the gate and shot from the floor, some rare footage.

Speaking of Houston Concerts in the 80s, did anyone on here happen to see or remember this 86 concert? I've heard it caused all the freeways near downtown to shut down till way past midnight.

Fringe, how about Don�s Records? I used to go in there and browse through his rack of obscure and import albums, and I picked up some gems. I got an early Shawn Phillips folk song album, Lenny Bruce performances that got him busted, John Lee Hooker with John Mayall and the Groundhogs recorded in London and pressed at Cleve Records on Holmes Rd.

One of the best albums I ever had was �Music From Free Creek� which was basically a huge jam session with Ronstadt, Dr. John and a number of �musician�s musicians�. But I learned a valuable lesson with that one � never lend out your records!

Ol� Don used to settle a lot of bets about any and all musical eras. I really liked him. Rest in Peace, Don!

Speaking of Houston Concerts in the 80s, did anyone on here happen to see or remember this 86 concert? I've heard it caused all the freeways near downtown to shut down till way past midnight.

I went the night before and watched the rehearsal in front of the stage with no lasers or fireworks and went back the next night and watched the real show from a distance. All the feeways near downtown were at a standstill, people would get out of there cars a watch the action from the freeway. Yea it was something to see. Probably seen by a million people.

There has never been a Houston Festival that topped that one and likely never will again. I remember parking somewhere in Montrose and pulling our then 2 year old daughter for blocks and blocks in her little red wagon to Allen Parkway. We never got close to the stage but we had a great view of downtown Houston. It was being simulcast over some radio station and there were plenty of "boom boxes" around so we didn't need to get any closer to hear the music.

I heard Cream, Fever Tree, Spirit, The Doors, and many more local and west cost bands that played there that year. Does anyone on here remember this or the call letters of that underground FM station?

Also my last concert I saw in Houston was Jetro Tull at the Houston Coliseum in 1979 the year of their Songs of the Woods album. I remember there was some heavy metal band that played before before Tull did that had a stage full of equipment for just a 3 piece band. Between sets they cleared the stage and out of the rafters they lowered Tull's equipment which was over half as much equipment as the metal bands and Tull out played the metal band all to hell.

Well back in the late 60s early 70s FM stations didn't really play rock they played mostly classical or easy listening. And like someone else all ready said they played music off the albums. Back then record companies made 2 versions of some songs one for the top 40 stations. Underground FM stations played the albums long versions of the songs.

True. Only underground stations played the full version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

It was a badass and a very fun show. We sit close to the stage and they had this beachball, that would vibrate with the music as it floated thru the air or it seemed to, might a been the buzz I had. Dont remember no opening show.

They closed the show I think with the lights out, and when the lights came back on, the band was gone. The song The Last Walz by the band started playing, that even sounded good.

I remember camping out at the Joske's (now Dillards) at Brazos Mall in Lake Jackson for concerts. Tickets would be like $6 with a $1 or $1.50 surcharge. Now it's a couple of hundred to go to a concert - PPPFFFFTTTT and you can't even get a free buzz from the smoke in the Summit (remember when the lights would go up at the end and the haze would be so bad you couldn't see the other side?).

The concert I saw was in 1979 the year I moved from Houston to Shreveport, La. to work for a Rolex dealer in their new store in a newly opened mall. The concert you saw must have been different concert than the one I saw, because no one threw-up on stage at the one me and my ex-wife saw.

Spent several nights camped out in front of the Coliseum, Music Hall and even Hofheinz Pavilion. Half the reason I quit going to concerts was when Pace Concerts took over ticketing and gouged everybody with all their "convenience fees".

I was at that concert too. There was a lot of pot at those shows.

Thanks Fringe, you actually cleared things up. I had a conversation with a guy at work that swears he went to the same Led Zepplin concert that I did, but he claims it was at the Coliseum. My older brother says we are both wrong, because he saw Led Zepplin play at the Music Hall. So we are all right, even though our memories are smoke filled.

there is YouTube video of Zeppelin at The Coliseum. There's no sound on the video other than Zeppelin tracks someone added to it, but, they were definitely at The Coliseum!
