citizen4rmptown
I'm a Reliant employee at 1000 Main, and I'm one of the folks who will be making the move. A couple of months ago, the *original* Reliant Energy sold its retail operation to NRG, and the brand name was part of the deal. So the original Reliant Energy has now changed its name to RRI Energy, and they are staying in 1000 Main. The *new* Reliant Energy (now part of NRG) is currently subleasing space in 1000 Main, but needs to GTFO eventually. It's a win for Houston Pavilions, because while 1000 Main may only be a block or so away, it's a loong surface block, particularly in a heat wave. And I think I can speak for most 1000 Main dwellers when I say we currently get most of our lunches from the tunnel system.thank you! not to mention that HP is 3 blocks long(excluding garage), so it can be up to 4 blocks away... While you'll never convince a guy like me, who used to walk as much as 10 blocks across downtown in a suit to the various courthouses no matter the weather, there are plenty of people in Houston who think sweating is a disease. I'm probably the only person on the forum who thinks complaining about walking a 250 foot block is the sign of a pansy. Remember, I was the one that went 2 1/2 weeks after Ike without AC...and didn't complain. So, I am kind of a weirdo, a Houstonian who will walk outside.

Nope, you're not the only one on the forum RedScare. I agree that complaining/whining about walking 250 feet is the sign of a pansy/chronic whiner. But for those who are too horrified of the surface to be able to handle the ENTIRE CITY BLOCK from 1000 Main to HP, they could ride the air conditioned elevators down to the tunnel level, cross over in air conditioned tunnels to Macy's, ride up the escalator in air conditioned comfort and then just cut across the corner to HP. Very few calories required.
The Great Hizzy!
I perspire easily but I still don't mind walking 2 or 3 blocks at lunch time. The only thing that discourages me from walking is when my breathing is out of whack. But different strokes...In any case, having a larger pool of potential customers even closer is a win for all parties. citizen4rmptown
Bottom line is, its great that retail space is being taken by office use because it looks like this is the best-case scenario...I personally could walk plenty of blocks, but Houston never was a walking-oriented city or pedestrian-oriented....so this should come to no surprise, and thank you for the hyperbole..... DrLan34
Went to Pete's Piano Bar last night... excellent stuff. Place was packed, good crowd, and the performers were very entertaining... I'm getting real excited about the other stuff opening up in the Pavilions this month. The place is starting to get a lot more foot traffic which is great to see downtown. I'm surprised they haven't invented and marketed a special Texas edition of an enclosed, air-conditioned lawn mower. And one wonders why it's fat capital of the world. Forever 21, HOB, Pete's Dueling Piano and when they get Lucky Strike it will be another successful venue. In addition, they have fully leased out the office space to a Fortune 500 corporation. It does have its faults but in comparison to BLVD and some of the other Mixed Use Developments that either didn't come to fruition or are faultering, this one seems to be off of life support and is making a full recovery.

Keep in mind that this is for a bunch or current and former (moved to the burbs) inner loopers. I'm not sure who came up with this place or how, but it struck me as interesting that a Pavillion restaurant got tabbed over any numbber of the other usual Inner Loop haunts. I hope this is a sign that this place will actually draw people who live 10-15 minutes away from downtown instead of just staying in Montrose, Heights, etc. The difficulty with downtown restaurants has always been that to attract close-in residents,as those residents had to drive past half a dozen great places to get to the downtown spot. Discovery Green is definitely a step in the right direction, as would be the longterm success of HP as a whole. It's still looking pretty dead, but let's see what Lucky Strike's opening does. BigSky
I think a mix is needed, the one mistake I believe the designers of HP made is by not mixing up the anchors to force people to walk through all four blocks. They should have paired HOB with Forever 21 and Lucky Strike with Books A Million. The synergy of the audiences would have played well with that pairing. Instead, what you have is people looking for entertainment will stay at the far end of HP and the people that are looking to shop will be 3 blocks away.Mix Use means exactly that.
