story about global warming making lawyers rich

Peter Roderick, director of the Climate Justice programme, said the most likely route for seeking damages would be tort cases, which deal with civil wrongs. Several have been attempted by US states against power and car companies only to be rejected by the courts.

Roderick said developing countries such as Nepal could also sue for compensation over damage caused by global warming. "As the issue of damages gets worse and worse, the chances of this happening will get greater and greater," he said. "I hope it happens." Oh brother! You can almost hear the giddiness in Peter's voice, can't you? -sigh-

So... Nepal goes to the world court and sues... say... China for global warming. Let's assume Nepal wins and is awarded a brazillion dollars in compensation. China tells the World Court to go stick its head in a pig.

So all we've done is run around in circles and accomplished nothing.

That would be about 40 cents US.

I don't think China would get too wound up over that.

they are not going to sue China.....they are going to sue the only country with money that is foolish enough to allow these type of stupid lawsuits with the only people in the world that are stupid enough to award the damages because they are ignorant to the fact that it will kill their own country.....the USA

This is utterly ridiculous. It is impossible to claim that a particular hurricane or tornado was caused by Global Warming. In fact, the changes to the climate will act to shuffle hurricanes, so that perhaps one summer month where two major storms would've made landfall now has no major storms, and where the next month would've had none but now has three, all of which struck completely different areas.

There is just too much randomness and chaos in nature to be able to attribute the proximate cause of any specific weather event to GW. There will even be individuals that, based on pure randomness, happen to benefit from GW. Should they be taxed more on that basis, so as to maintain the status quo? Or perhaps in recognition that some places are more susceptible to damaging storms or droughts, would it be better public policy not to encourage them to seek recompense, thus encouraging them to move to safer places?
