brucesw
A reader of my blog sent me this flyer and I thought some people here would get a kick out of it.He was 12 at the time and attended the show; he knew singer/songwriter Terri Sharp who is still alive in Kerrville.Yes, there really was a KILT DJ named James Bond 008. Fringe
That was cool. Thanks for posting. I remember Russ Knight from KILT. Have a sneeking suspicion that James Bond was not really that one DJ's name.

brucesw
You're right. James Bond was not his real name. And he wasn't English either. He was born in San Francisco with the name Bennett Gordon Schwartzmann, but he's better known in radio circles as Alex Bennett. Yes, THAT Alex Bennett, the legendary New York DJ and cable TV porn meister who is still spinning them out on satellite radio. Here's a link to his story on the WikiPedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_BennettCheck out how he looks today on his personal website http://www.radiofreejack.com/Thanks Filio. I wasn't here then and was never sure. I think I heard him once with the English accent but had forgotten about it. I also thought he had morphed into Alex Bennet even before leaving KILT but wasn't sure. Never thought to look him up in Wiki - duh.Bill Young went on to be long time program director of KILT-AM/FM and since leaving has run nationally known Bill Young Productions. Most HAIFers would probably recognize his voice even if they never listened to him on the radio as a DJ.
FilioScotia
Alex Bennett and Bill YoungYou are right in saying James Bond morphed into Alex Bennett before he left KILT. The James Bond morning show left the air sometime in the mid 60s. Not very long after that, a new guy named Alex Bennett showed up at KILT playing records and taking phone calls. The new voice and personna were so different hardly anybody outside KILT knew that Bennett and Bond were one and the same. That schtick was so successful he took it on the road, and the next thing you know Alex Bennett was on the air in NYC. The rest is history. You are also right in saying that Bill Young's voice is one of the more familiar voices out there. For a lot of years in the 70s, 80s and 90s Young was the voice that introduced "Eyewitness News" at the top of KTRK's 6pm and 10pm newscasts. I have no idea who is doing that now, but it's not Young. He has his own very successful TV and radio production company now. Bill Young Productions. Even today you can hear him doing radio commercials in the same screaming-at-the-top-of-his-lungs style he perfected on KILT in the 1960s. Personally I've always hated that style of commercial announcing, but, somebody out there likes it, obviously. He wouldn't do them that way if it didn't make money for the guy paying for them. Retama
Wow, great picture of the Coastliners on page 4 of that brochure. The Coastliners were a group from Baytown/Lynchburg that came very close to hitting the big time and had several regional hits. They opened for many of the top rock acts that visited Houston in the mid-to-late 1960s. They were about the only white group that Don Robey signed for his label. misplaced txgirl
I still have a couple of KILT Solid Gold albums from back in the late 60"s... anyone else remember "Hudson and Harrigan"?
Frank M
I still have a couple of KILT Solid Gold albums from back in the late 60"s...anyone else remember "Hudson and Harrigan"? I also have one of these. I believe there were many incarnations of H & H (one of which was Stevens & Pruitt), but I think the ones on that album were the originals. There is also available the two Beatles shows at the Sam Houston Coliseum, hosted by KILT's, The Weird Beard.
brucesw
I don't know how many teams there have been that have used the names (Mack) Hudson and (Irv) Harrigan; some of the pairings didn't last long. The current team has been together since 1981 at least, however, and both worked as solo jocks on the station before teaming up. They probably hold some sort of record for longevity as a morning team on Houston radio. The original duo to use the name probably followed James Bond 008 who I think didn't last long. One of their real names was Mack Hudson, the other was Paul Menard. They left to do a morning show in San Diego but one died a few years later.CBS just cut H&H's long-time newsman, R. B. McEntire, who was with the station since the late 60s also, and Traffic Reporter, T.J. Callahan.
