Trae
It's a running joke ed. Trae said the polls "didn't matter" when McCain was in the lead a couple of weeks ago, and that only the electoral college website mattered at that point, and the rest of the Libs. here agreed. Now, when Obama is back on top, the polls are in play again ? It's just very amusing.Do you see me posting Gallup polls? Nope. I've always posted the Electoral Map closer to the election. Once Obama and the DC Marxist goon squad start stripping freedoms away and redistributing wealth -- you'll see a nation-wide "separatist movement". Texas might be the epicenter of that.Keep your seatbelts on, Marxists. There's still a silent majority out here that won't tolerate a Marxist USA. Come on out in public and brief us on the 'proper and appropriate steps' you and your fellow patriots who make up this alleged 'majority' intend to take. Why not get all Martin Luther on us. plumber2
I think it doubtful that Obama will win Texas. Most democrats in Texas tend to vote for the Republican presidential candidate. They also tend to vote for the republican guebnatorial candidate which later comes back to bite them. My point being is that Hillary Clinton was able to win the popular vote in the Texas Democratic primary, but Obama was able to capture more delegates because of our unique delgate selection process.Example: My precenct in Galveston County was allocated only 1 delegate and 1 alternate to the state convention. We sent a Clinton delgate and a Clinton alternate. A similar sized precent over in LaMarque was allocated 5 delegates and 5 alternates, because the rules allocate delegates by how many voters in that precenct voted for the democratic guebnatorial candidate in previous general election. Black voters are very loyal, and therefore always vote for the democratic candidate, insuring a larger piece of the convention delegates in the next primary season. (That precenct sent 5 Obama delgates and 5 Obama alternates to the state convention. The 5 alternates all eventually got seated as Obama delegates because so many Clinton delgates apparently lost interest and did not attend). But McCain will probably win Texas easily. KinkaidAlum
Please don't close this thread about TEXAS and the possibility of Obama winning. It is far too amusing to disappear. To stay on topic, I don't think Obama has a chance in Texas but there are several red states from 2000 and 2004 that he can and will win.Obama has leads outside of the margin of error in New Mexico, Iowa, and Virginia. He also has narrower leads in Colorado, Nevada, North Dakota, Missouri, Ohio, and Florida. And, he's tied in North Carolina. He's trailing, but just barely, in Indiana and West Virginia and he's making huge inroads in Georgia and Montana. What is interesting is he is no longer actively campaigning in North Dakota and Georgia and he never was actively campaigning in West Virginia (although, West Virginians get media market feed from Ohio, Penn. and Virginia). barracuda
Are people form rural areas more racist or just more conservative?I would describe them as less educated and less informed. Like HtownWxBoy said, there are stark differences in states like Pennsylvania. I grew up near Philadelphia, and it was generally progressive and liberal-leaning, like much of the Northeast. But the the smaller working class towns, and especially the secluded towns in the Appalachian mountains, will make you feel like you've traveled back in time. It's as if these folks were cut off from the rest of society many years ago, and some of their prejudices still remain. But I'm sure this is the case in all states. When people are far removed from the dynamics of cities and society in general, I imagine they are less apt to be concerned about progressive issues and less likely to have an accurate world view. That's not saying everyone is racist... I am saying there is a higher percentage of those who are. This also doesn't mean all of these people want to join the KKK... they may not "hate", they just may not like or trust people of a different race b/c of things they believe are true. When you live in a more diverse area like a big city you tend to become more educated and open-minded b/c you are exposed to others who are different from you. When you live in a more diverse area like a big city you tend to become more educated and open-minded b/c you are exposed to others who are different from you.I think what you're describing is the effects of cultural isolation, not necessarily ruralism. If you put a group of white people out in the woods to live, the stereotype is that they will learn to fear blacks from the city.Similarly, though, if you have a group of blacks who don't venture to other parts of a city, they will learn to fear whites. The inverse is also true.If you have a group of white people in an enclave of a city who don't venture beyond their cultural boundaries they can learn to fear blacks (I think of my grandmother who lived in a very very white part of Brooklyn). And if you put blacks in the sticks (think of the small black towns of Mississippi) they learn to fear whites. The people inbetween who don't learn to fear another race, or learn to overcome that fear, aren't necessarily more educated or open-minded. They're just used to seeing other people and realize that there are more similarities than differences between different types of people. All humans are products of their experiences, whether they live in the city or the country. therepguy
Very insightful. I think Bush should be the new baseline against which other Presidents will be measured. By that measure, either candidate is an improvement. It's just a matter of getting through the trough in the wake of all the Bush disasters. If the next President can survive that and turn things around, he will be judged a success. Can it be ... an enlighten Texan?
