I think Fertilla should be the new owner for an expansion soccer team in Houston. He knows entertainment, and he just might be able to help soccer grow financially :-)

Soccer? Yuck. Let him buy the Astros, spend millions like Steinbrenner and bring a world championship to Houston. This man is into larger than life stuff, let him bring it to a big sport.

I also love the idea of a new theme park.

Fertitta just wants to prove a point, IMHO. I have a love/hate relationship with him, I can't explain it, but I hate the fact that the Landry's sold out so perhaps I am just bitter about that.

Plus, I think he ruined Kemah, but that's just me. If he buys the Astros I think I will absolutely implode.

^how did he ruin kemah? before the boardwalk, i had no reason to go there. we would only go to pappadeaux on the north side of the bridge to go eat.

coming home for xmas one year ('00 i think) i was surprised to find people wanting to go to kemah, which was unheard of in the 90's.

Well, like I said, it's just my opinion, and ya know what they say about those ;) . I grew up here and going to Kemah was a regular treat for us, it was sleepy, it was Texas, it was lazy, it was peaceful. Now it's crowded, noisy, boisterous and it's kind of its own amusement park. I'm sure once my kid is old enough we'll go there again (and I'll cry for the old Kemah LOL) but for now, sorry, I am steering clear because it just isn't the same. If you want to know what it used to be like, just go on the other side of the bridge to Sundowner's, that's what it used to be like. Marvelously underdeveloped.

Yeah, progress and all--I know. Sometimes progress sucks, if you ask me. But I am very sentimental and nostalgic, a bit old for my years. Things just move along too fast for my tastes, especially when it's all backed by Fertitta, who IMHO has a family axe to grind with the city of Galveston's more high-profile citizens (and to me, is just a big showoff).

A good book to read is called Galveston: A History of the Island by Gary Cartwright. It gives much insight to the Fertitta family and their politics with the Moodys. Much like the Hatfields and McCoys, but with a bit of mafia mystery to it.

Um, remember that soccer's the biggest sport in the world, dude, and that a guy like him whose known to want larger than life things could probably do the same to the ENTIRE sport of soccer in the US and fame to Houston that he could the Astros in MLB. I can see him being a much more effective soccer owner than an Astros owner, but I can't see him failing at either spot either.

I also agree that him owning a new theme park in Houston would be totally sweet!

I love the ferris wheel. You know nothing. Kemah is 10 times better today than it was 10 years ago. They never had midway games before and now they got a train, and water fountain, and a huge parking garage and and more cool stuff...the stage for people to play music on, all kinds of rides like those things that go in a circle with horses on 'em, they got stuff (fish food) you can buy and feed the fishies, people take your picture there and you can buy it, they sell cotton candy.

You know NOTHING about architecture/design/development/realty/construction/architectural-history/exercise.

Just my honest opinion

Wow Hornblower laying it down there. I see both sides of the picture. I grew up in Clear lake, so we used to go to Kemah way back when it was basically a mud fest every time it rained, the roads were basically gravel, and it was the Dutchman, Brass Parrot, Fishbones, and Joe Lee's. Nothing beat a casual Sunday sitting on the deck at the dutchman having some crawfish and looking at the boats. Peaceful and serene. The food actually was really good upstairs too.

Then it all started to go touristy. The roads were fixed, games came in, the boardwalk was built, the restaurants all changed, the food went bad and prices went up. That being said, it is finally a tourist destination for people from Houston and outside of Houston too. There is a hotel, and Rock the Dock on Thursdays get packed with people having a good time. Peaceful and serene? not anymore. Good in the greater sense? Probably. As long as people are enjoying it and its doing well, who am I to say its a bad thing.

If I don't like it, I just don't go, and I don't go anymore. But that doesn't mean its awful either. The water is still there, so as mentioned there are still other places to go and relax.

In a story in the Galveston Daily News today talking about Landry's recent move into the Las Vegas casino scene, it states that Landry's sold two parcels of land it owned on the Seawall.

During the conference call, Hamilton asked Fertitta why he was selling two big chunks of prime Galveston real estate on the Seawall at 34th Street and the old Sea-Arama Marineland site.

Houston-based Landry's Restaurants said today it reached a deal to sell the bulk of Joe's Crab Shack restaurants for about $192 million to a private equity group.

In July, Landry's said it saw its future in gaming, entertainment and high-end restaurants and was exploring options for its lower-end concept, Joe's.

Under the deal, JCS Holdings

Tilman's just going back to his family's roots when it comes to gaming.

Tilman has publicly said that it would take 40 well-run restaurants to make the kind of profit realized by just 1 casino. His vision includes versions of the Golden Nugget opened all over the country. I could envision Tilman doing one of two things. Either getting the gaming laws changed in Texas to make gaming legal, and not just on Indian reservations, so he can have both restaurants and casinos in Texas. (Remember, the gaming issue isn't completely dead yet, and if Perry gets re-elected, it will be brought up once again.) Or, selling off his free-standing restaurants and moving ahead with the casinos-across-America plan and only operating restaurants located within the big-profit casinos. Or perhaps a third option might even be more appealing to Tilman: sell off everything and just do online gambling exclusively. :D

hmm...i am sure Fertitta will find a way to make this go away. he and his family are good at that.

this is from the Chronicle yesterday:

Landry's Restaurants Chairman and CEO Tilman Fertitta said Friday the company is financially sound and that its current debt problem is easily solved.

"It's no big deal," he said. "I can solve it tomorrow by writing a check, but I'm negotiating."

Landry's shares fell nearly 9 percent Friday after an analyst downgraded its stock.

Why on Earth would you let your Alligator mouth overload your Alligator Skin wallet ?!? Tillman's financial statement has to be one of the stupidest ever on record. You basically tell the bank that "I could go ahead and write you a check, if I wanted. But I ain't gonna do that, let's haggle, and risk ruining my credit with you guys !" It seems the Emperor and his new clothes may get a reality check cashed on his @$$ !

Heh Heh! I knew this news would brighten YOUR day Papillion. You go girl !
