Google Chrome

I did ... but I haven't really tested it out. As you know, I am on a Mac and they don't have a native version yet, but I have downloaded it into Vista running on a Virtual Box partition.

The interface is ... different. Very different.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that Google is eventually going to go head-to-head not just with Internet Explorer, as many people have written about, but with Microsoft on their whole Office suite. Google has something called Gears that allows you to run their many 'office' products offline and Chrome is a major part of that strategy.

it seems to upload pages much faster.

I don't like that it doesn't have a drop down for previously visited websites. That means I either have to remember them all or bookmark them.

It'll take some getting used to not having a home page too.

Seems like I saw in the cartoon illustration that recently-viewed, and most-viewed, web pages now open in their own tab...? I could be wrong on that.

They do, up to nine it looks like. But what if I don't want to open another browser to find a recently visited website, ya know?

At home it is definitely faster than IE, Safari, or FF.....but I don't like the way they handle organizing favorites....they have said this will be updated in future versions.

At work, we use Symantec Endpoint Protection which causes Chrome to crash - there is a workaround, but it disables most of the security features (you have to turn off sandbox)

I'm looking forward to future updates to see what kind of plug-ins become available...

Am I crazy or is their no homepage? Seems kinds weird to not be able to use my igoogle homepage with my new google browser.

flipper

You can add the Home Icon under Options... and Yes, you can still set whatever page you want to be your homepage.

  • I'm trying it at work.. I do find it slightly faster.. but that might be because I read their whole cartoon explaining chrome and I now expect it to be faster based on how different they are going about things.... still, it does seem slightly faster.
  • I find the browser does slightly freeze every now and then, which it isn't supposed to do now... but its never for very long and it hasnt crashed the browser.
  • I think the layout is nice, simple, and I really like the tab to new window and visa versa.. and it looks cool when its doing it.
  • I too dont like the fact that there isn't a pull down menu of frequent sites...... but I love the new tab window graphically displaying frequent sites..... so i guess its just a matter of getting used to Always going to a new tab when switching to a new site.
  • It doesnt appear to work well with all plugins.. esp microsoft plugins... Cant get the Photosynth to work.
  • It doesn't work with the Bloglines taskbar Notifer... even though i've set chrome as default, clicking the icon still opens bloglines in firefox. Reinstalling the notifier didn't work. This is annoying.. but the workaround is I always have my first tab open to igoogle which includes a bookmark for bloglines... so i still get notifed and its now a 2 click process instead of 1..... but still... would be nice to be able to just click the icon and get there.

Overall, i like the simplicity and way they do some things... but it is a beta and there's room to make it better.

How long does it take to load the "View New Posts" page?

FireFox just took about 2 seconds to load that, Chrome took 5.

Took my Firefox about 2 seconds and Chrome about 1 second...

Where is this exactly? I saw it once and now do not see it or know how to get it to display.

Click on the Plus to the right of your tabs. Once you have established a history, clicking it essentially opens up a new tab with graphic links to your most visited sites ( to me, thats almost the same as the pull down ) ... the only catch is, its like your pull down only works in a new tab, never the existing tab.

Ah ... see that is different. I would have thought the '+' was to open a new tab.

... um, how do you open a new tab...?

The plus does open a new tab.... just not a blank new tab.... It opens the tab you see, where you have the option of going to one of your frequent sites, bookmarks, google search, or your address bar to go where you want to go.

It assumes if you are opening a new tab from scratch, that you want to go somewhere you've been before and go frequently.. so its like a new tab template.... and if you rather go somewhere else, then you can ignore the template and go strait to the address bar.

Depends on if you want a new tab from scratch... above... or you can still open any link as a new tab by CNTRL clicking or right clicking

Anyone else download it yet?

I feel like a cheating husband, I already abandoned FF and replaced it with Chrome.

The tabs in the header are great, as it the design and simplicity of it all.

I love it, some parts are a bit slow, but I think it's called BETA for that reason, can't wait for the final product, but will gladly use it until then.

What's this rubbish, not even a single porn site on your front page. Fail! :P

At the rate Google is growing, they might come out with their own OS in a couple of years...lol!

Google has already built its own OS. It's what runs the Google search engine. I wonder how complicated it would be to modify it and release it to the public.

I've heard this too. I am so torn. I want to get a small footprint Linux laptop (think Asus eeePC or the new Dell mini), but Xandros (Linux) is weird and I do NOT like Vista. I have Ubuntu installed on VirtualBox on my Mac but rarely go into it because it is seems odd to run on OS inside of another OS. I also run Vista this way when I do not feel like shutting down and running Bootcamp.

A Google OS is very intriguing.
