TOXIC BILLS.

Houston-area legislators filed bills in the House and Senate last week to increase monitoring and to develop standards for toxic air pollutants in response to reports that levels of air toxics in some Houston neighborhoods were high enough to increase cancer risk. The bills joined one already filed that would require the state environmental agency to review how it permits the release of toxic air pollution.

RADIOACTIVE WASTE. The state approved a request by Dallas-based Waste Control Specialists to expand the volume of low-level radioactive waste it can store at its plant in Andrews County. Now the plant can accept tons of radioactive waste currently stored in concrete silos near Cincinnati.

INCIDENT LOG. A dozen industrial plants in the Houston area reported accidental releases of pollution during the last week. The 14 so-called upsets emitted an estimated 76,000 pounds of pollution, according to state records.
