BryanS
The ground-based GMT will be more powerful than Hubble, and perhaps Hubble's successor, for one reason: it has a huge mirror (80 effective feet in diameter). Problem with ground-based telescopes, even large ones, is the Earth's atmosphere. The James Web Space Telescope (JWST) is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and will be space-based:http://www.jwst.nasa.gov/ (Kind of looks like a Star Wars Imperial Cruiser)...comparing JWST and HST:http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/06/0608_040608_hubble.htmlHubble vs. The Next Generation Scheduled for launch in 2011, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could be powerful enough to "see" objects 400 times fainter than those visible with Earth-based telescopes
memebag
I don't understand this part. In Chile? :That's where they plan to build it. UT and A&M are just announcing that they want to help fund its construction, not build it in Texas. They are hoping to own 10% of it if they can raise $55 million.
