Foreclosure Prevention Task Force

Too many people have been foreclosed on already. How is it fair to help some and not others? Foreclosures are good, they bring down home values and make homes more affordable. Get rid of property taxes if you want to help people avoid forclosure. Taxes should be based on income which often changes. You shouldn't have to pay rent on your house for the rest of your life in the form of taxes. When you buy and pay for a house you should own it free and clear.

Very true. We need to replace our property taxes, lower our sales tax, as much as practical, with a state income tax. That way, renters will have to pay their fair share too, and not just the landlords (or people who own their homes). Of course, this could result in the poor actually paying more in taxes than rich people...

Don't you think that renters are essentially paying property taxes as part of their rent? As a landlord or potential landlord, wouldn't you take any mortgage, taxes and insurance in to account and make sure that all of those are covered by the rent you could charge?

I rather like our current tax system. I can keep my taxes low and still earn a ton of money by simply owning a modest home, and not buying a bunch of crap at Wal-Mart. It also should be noted that our current state tax system encourages saving rather than spending.

Homeowners receive a tax break through the homestead exemption, a break that can be sizeable. Landlords, on the other hand, receive no tax breaks, paying taxes on the full value of the property. Considering the fact that no landlord stays in business very long without passing the taxes on to his tenants, renters actually pay more property taxes than homeowners. Renters pay equally on sales, gas, cigarette and liquor taxes. Renters are getting no free rides, even if they may not pay the property tax directly.

I'd be in favor of reducing (or eliminating) property taxes and making up the revenue in a state income tax.
