Man, not to belittle these photographers but none of these photos do it justice. Looks absolutely awesome! People need to see it in person.

You shouldn't, cause this is really a great shot.

Thank you my good man.  Just giving Triton a hard time.  The building does look great.  I'm working on a connection to get me into the building for some pictures of the views so hopefully I can work something out!

Roka Akor to open in 2929 Weslayan

One of Houston's newest luxury residential towers has snagged national restaurant Roka Akor Steak, Seafood & Sushi to anchor its first-floor retail space.

This will be Roka Akor's first Texas location, adding to its existing eateries in Scottsdale, Ariz., San Francisco, Chicago and Skokie, Il.

The restaurant signed a lease for 6,591 square feet in 2929 Weslayan, the 40-story tower at the northeast corner of Weslayan and West Alabama.

"Roka Akor will be a great complement to the amenities at 2929 Weslayan as we create the perfect feeling of home and luxury living environment," Wm. Roger Gregory, president of investments of developer PM Realty Group, said in a statement.

The multifamily building includes 254 rental units and 11,880 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Units range in size from 850 to 4,000 square feet with the average apartment leasing for around $4,000 per month.

James Namken, Kyle Knight and Edward Heap of the Weitzman Group represented PMRG in the lease. Mike Wheeler with Streetwise Retail Advisors represented Roka Akor.

Managed by JNK Concepts, Roka Akor offers Japanese cuisine with with a menu that changes seasonally. The restaurant's design prominently features a robata grill.

To add to that from CultureMap:

At 6,951-square feet, the restaurant will be a substantial addition to the area. For those unfamiliar with the restaurant, Roka Akor has earned praise in all three cities it inhabits. In a two-and-a-half star review for the San Francisco Chronicle, restaurant critic Michael Bauer praised Roka Akor's omakase dinner that blends all three aspects of the restaurant's cuisine. He cited uni served with lime and chicharrones, wagyu steak and miso-glazed cod as particular highlights.

The restaurant plans to open in the fall of 2016.

With both State of Grace and SaltAir Seafood Kitchen opening to rave reviews and six restaurants coming to River Oaks District (including Austin-based burger chain Hopdoddy), dining in the area around River Oaks has suddenly gotten a lot more interesting. If Roka Akor maintains the standards it has set in other parts of the country, it will be another welcome addition.

But it looks like Houston Press broke the news first in a small blurb around 6 this morning:

A reader tip told us that the Michelin-starred steak, seafood and sushi restaurant Roka Akor has established a limited corporation filing as Roka Akor River Oaks, and the restaurant's website finally lists a forthcoming Houston location. Jakeisha Wilmore of  CheapEats in Houston let us know that address is 2929 Weslayan and it's part of the 2929 Weslayan apartment tower.

According to the square footage, the restaurant will be located in the bottom left of the rendering.

Here's the updated site plan that shows Roka Akor (archived link in case it's updated or removed in the future)

Any word on the other retail space?

This building is no longer lit up. Maybe residents complained it was causing too much glow in their units who knows. It is too bad because it was great to look at lit up and was unique for the city.  Too many buildings in Houston don't have good light displays and this one was unique. Hopefully, they will light it up again but I haven't seen the lights on in weeks.

I had kind of wondered if the lights were visible to the interiors.. I hope they thought the design implementation through and thats not the case. Otherwise, a real shame, not to mention a waste of money for the developer. Who's the guy who's sister lives in the building.. Maybe they'll have the scoop?

Is it just me or does this building look like a 40 story vagina when lit? I wish downtown would incorporate more creative lighting.

If you stare at anything long enough it can look like a 40 story vagina when lit.

As LED costs get lower we'll see more stuff on new buildings, I think. long lasting, cheap to install, and cheap to operate makes these adds easy. Hopefully.

Was checking out at Central Market and noticed everybody outside was taking photos of the sky. I was like... what's going on! Turns out it was a double rainbow. Overheard somebody say that double rainbows are rare.  To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen one?

Caught 2929 Weslayan in the background

The rainbow was very bright and color pronounced! It was amazingly strong.

Nearly every rainbow is a double rainbow.

Only rare when they break off from the same base.
