Favorite (or worst) Telenovela

Pasion has to rank as the absolute worst (all the costumes are interesting, but the acting is overly dramatic).

A close second is al diablo con los guapos is funny, but odd humor. And if I see Milagros cry ONE MORE TIME I am gonna scream. Or punch my eyes out...

These have to rank as the two of the oddest.

I used to watch one called "Mirada de Mujer" (it had English subtitles) on Univision. Or Telemundo. I can't remember.

Initially it was the novelty of it, then I guess I got hooked.

Those things are addicting..... I try to avoid them, once I watch one episode, I get hooked. Few years back in my student days I would spend the block of 6pm-9pm watching Novelas.

My favorite was Betty la Fea (Colombian Version) after which came a bad Mexican Version and the now Americanized Ugly Betty.

Notice how the men always wear business suits/ties at home even while they argue and fight with each other. Almost every female is drop dead gorgeous just like runway models. Everyone lives in a mansion with maids. The ladies always cry and cry and cry and cry. The older men are all married to girls young enough to be their grandaughters (creepy).

This is good way to learn another language though.

Its neat to compare these shows to Spain's TV shows, big, big difference. You can buy Spain's programs online. I have several of bullfights (Plaza de Toros) of Spain or Espana complete with commercials, etc.

What the heck let's go to Madrid for a minute or two :P

God yes! On the one I mentioned above the main character (Milagros) cries at the drop of a hat. The women are pretty (men at bad looking either), but they are sooooo overly dramatic.

Oh yeah, they all live in a super mansion too!

I think the one I watched, "Mirada de Mujer" (mentioned above) must have been one of the more "reality" based ones. The majority of the cast wasn't too terribly good-looking; they weren't unattractive, but more average looking. The storylines weren't outlandish, and it looked like they filmed on actual locations rather than sets.

Since we are such an "International" city, local soaps should also be in German, Italian, etc. For whatever anyone wants to learn. Surely there is a market for all of the other newcomers to Houston. I mean besides south of the border. It would be so neat to see a show in Japanese spoken in Japanese and French and so on.

Bonne? :D

While confined to bed, I briefly got addicted to "dos mujeres, un camino" (Two women, one road). I was channel surfing and I saw eric estrada. ("Hey! that's not a CHiP's episode!") and got sucked in. The withdrawal symptoms were horrific.

Not to mention we have a good number of number of people here. Maybe we should have some so the Canadian population can understand. :D

The telenovelas are a big export business. For whatever reason they have appeal in a lot of countries, and are dubbed into Russian, Romanian, etc.

I think some of that has to be because of the sex and the (very) skimpy outfits some of the women wear. I thought I saw one several years ago with a sheer blouse on and no bra. I think that she was unhooked was what got me hooked.

Not to hijack topic but I have been watching British "Tele" for decades and got hooked on "The Eastender's" Ja! since I am an East Ender at heart.

In fact most of my stay home Saturday night's were all PBS channel 8 British comedies. The Vicar of Dibley, Are you being Served, Last Summer's Wine, East Enders, etc. I just love the thick cockney accent's and they do vary from different parts of England just like here in US. Some of their comedies are very risque' and bawdy. They tell a simple joke or snide remark and the crowd cracks up and we here go like Huh? The accent is fast so I guess Americans as they say just don't get British comedy. Depends on the person I guess. Got that old chap?

Who can forget Bennie Hill Show? Whoa!

full frontal un-adulterated TV entertainment! :o:rolleyes:

I've seen "Eastenders". Can't understand a word they're saying.

Gosh if you let it The Eastenders will suck you in and not let you go. I used to watch marathons they'd broadcast on Sundays when I lived in the DC area (not sure if they still do that).

The theme song is kinda neat and catchy, and not sure why I always loved that map of London.

I know for one thing that "Eastenders" doesn't put a lot of emphasis on attractiveness for its cast or good lighting. That surprised me a little after years of watching "Days of our Lives" and then turning on "Eastenders" for the first time.

Are the two brothers on there still? Forget their names. They looked like swole versions of Jason Statham (Transporter). I think one of them owned a bar.

When KUHT first started showing it in the late 80s, they sent out glossaries to explain terms like "GBH of the earhole". They showed it every night for a while and it was addictive. After Den Watts died (the first time) I drifted away from it. I tried watching some new episodes and it seemed much cheesier and less gritty.

That's about the time I started watching it too. We were already listening to most of the punk music from the UK and buying up all the albums we could find here so the show was a nice cherry on the cake. The young punk couple is what drew me in to watch and she was pregnant. Hit very close to home. Still have most of my Brit albums too. The show was focused on the neighborhhod town people around the bar. Bloody good show I must say. :P Simply smashing.
