mojeaux131
I'm pretty sure the first president of the Republic of Texas was a guy named Sam Houston.

mojeaux131
Whoops. Thanks for the eye-opener. I guess this really demonstrates Wikipedia's fallibility, accessible though it may be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_texasPerhaps he is not commonly credited as the first president of the republic because (at least Wikipedia says) he was Interim President, while Houston was the first elected president. Either way, I wasn't aware of this and I thank you for the correction. Also, I'm sad I didn't learn this in Texas History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_G._Burnet

Just a wonderin y'all.
MidtownCoog
There is also a Burnet Elementary in Galveston.
Heights2Bastrop
Suffice to say that Burnett and Houston were not the best of friends. When the Yellowstone arrived at San Jacinto following the battle, Burnett refused to allow the wounded Houston on board. The captain interceded and allowed Houston passage to Galveston. As a bit of added trivia, when Houston arrived at the pier in New Orleans from Galveston, a crowd gathered to greet the hero of San Jacinto. In the crowd was 17-year-old Margaret Lea who 4 years later would later became his wife.
