Position: Civic Art + Design Senior Project Manager

Organization Summary: Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is the region's umbrella arts service organization. The agency manages more than $9.5 million in annual grants to arts organizations, is the primary administrator of the City of Houston's Civic Art + Design + Collection Management Program currently valued at $5.5 million, manages an incubator program for emerging arts organizations, and manages ArtsHound, Houston's web-based arts and culture calendar.

Position Summary: Civic Art + Design Senior Project Manager is responsible for management of civic art projects for the City of Houston and other public and private clients. The position includes a wide range of project management duties between artists and client representatives and requires off site meetings. Under the supervision of Civic Art + Design Director, Senior Project Manager guides the development of projects from artist selection and concept development through fabrication and installation. The position requires knowledge of the arts, at least four years of experience in public art or urban design management, at least two years of supervisory and/or consulting work in the public sector, self-starter and multitasking organizational capacity, commitment to high performance standards and quality outcomes, and a strong interest in developing the program's aesthetic objectives, new initiatives, policies, and procedures.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and/or supervise City of Houston civic art and design projects according to contract terms, City's and HAA's policies and procedures, and best practices from the public art industry.
  • Manage and/or supervise other than City of Houston public and private projects as assigned in accordance with contract terms.Develop contractual agreements with clients and artists.Contribute to civic art capital planning process and annual reports.
  • Prepare agenda items and deliver staff reports at monthly meetings of the Civic Art + Design + Collection Management Committee and HAA Board of Directors.
  • Interface with City of Houston staff from various departments, including the General Services Department, Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department, Houston Airport System, Parks, Libraries, Police, Fire, Health, among others, as well as elected officials.
  • Interface with project managers, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and other project and community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and document artist selection panels and meetings.Coordinate and document artist activities from artist selection through art conservation and maintenance documents in accordance with prevailing policies and contract terms.
  • Coordinate billing and payment for artist related services.Plan and coordinate special events related to civic art projects.
  • Assist in preparing reports, proposals, and special presentations.
  • Assist in developing educational and public outreach materials, including brochures, website information, walking tours, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
  • Conduct educational opportunities, including walking tours and lectures.
  • Assist Director of Civic Art + Design in developing the program's aesthetic objectives, new initiatives, policies and procedures, and staff manuals.
  • Coordinate hiring junior staff and interns.
  • Perform as Acting Director of Civic Art + Design in the absence of Director, with approval from HAA's Chief Executive Officer.

Education: Bachelor's degree in fine art, art history, studio art, architecture and urban design, public policy and nonprofit administration, or related area required. Masters preferred.

Experience: At least four years of experience in public art or urban design management and at least two years of supervisory and/or consulting work in the public sector. Knowledge and appreciation of the arts is required. Experience in public art, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design preferred. Experience in working with artists and the public. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proficiency in standard office software; database and spreadsheet experience preferred. Knowledge of standard invoicing practices. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to understand complex bureaucratic systems and processes. Ability to plan with attention to detail. Commitment to high performance standards and quality outcomes.

Supervision Given: Junior staff and interns as appropriate.

Supervision Received: Civic Art + Design Director.

Salary and Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience in the range of $54,000
