Position: Civic Art + Design Coordinator

Organization Summary: Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is the region's umbrella arts service organization. The agency manages more than $9.5 million in annual grants to arts organizations, is the primary administrator of the City of Houston's Civic Art + Design + Collection Management Program currently valued at $5.5 million, manages an incubator program for emerging arts organizations, and manages ArtsHound, Houston's web-based arts and culture calendar.

Position Summary: Civic Art + Design Coordinator will assist with managing and coordinating civic art and design projects, master plans, programs, and initiatives for the City of Houston and other public and private clients. The position requires at least two years of experience in coordinating art, architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design projects; arts/design education and public outreach experience; project management experience; ability to develop educational materials and conduct workshops; self-starter and multitasking organizational capacity; and strong commitment to high performance standards and quality outcomes. Experience with design software programs is a plus.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of Civic Art + Design Director and Project Managers, assist with City of Houston civic art and design projects according to contract terms, City's and HAA's policies and procedures, and best practices from the public art and urban design industry.
  • Assist with other than City of Houston public and private projects as assigned in accordance with contract terms.Research, help develop, and coordinate independently new civic art and design programs and initiatives, such as temporary civic art programs, civic art residency program within city agencies, community-based art initiatives, and city master planning efforts with HAA's participation.
  • Coordinate the monthly review of citywide temporary art proposals by the Civic Art + Design + Collection Management Committee.
  • Coordinate agendas, reports and logistics for monthly meetings of the Civic Art + Design + Collection Management Committee and HAA Board of Directors.
  • Perform as a civic art education & outreach liaison to the City of Houston staff from various departments as well as elected officials.
  • Interface with project managers, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and other project and community stakeholders.
  • Plan and coordinate special events related to civic art and design projects, for example, art unveiling, community outreach, etc.
  • Assist in preparing reports, proposals, and special presentations.Assist in developing educational and public outreach materials, including brochures, website information, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
  • Promote and coordinate educational venues: workshops, public art salons, walking tours, and lectures.

Education: Bachelor's degree in fine art, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or related area required. Master's degree substitutes for two years of professional experience.

Experience: At least two years of experience in coordinating art, architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design projects. Knowledge and appreciation of the arts is required. Experience in working with artists/designers and the public. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to conduct educational workshops. Experience with design software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, AutoCAD. Knowledge of database management is a plus. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to understand complex bureaucratic systems and processes. Ability to plan with attention to detail. Commitment to high performance standards and quality outcomes.

Supervision Given: Interns as appropriate.

Supervision Received: Civic Art + Design Director.

Salary and Benefits: $40,000 annually. Standard benefits package for full-time employees includes: vacation accrued at 6.67 hours per month; sick leave accrued at 6.67 hours per month; holidays as stated in HAA's personnel policies; health and dental coverage; and an annual contribution of five percent of salary to a retirement plan.

Classification Status: This position is classified as regular, full time, salaried, and exempt.
