TJones
Couldn't generate enough money to keep afloat. No pun intended. I remember one the waterskiers in the show take a bad bad spill right infront of me back in like '77 or '78. He was trying to be all cool, and glide in off the water but his ski dug into the sand and it looked like the $10000 winner of an "AFV" show. Pumapayam
Couldn't generate enough money to keep afloat. No pun intended. But you would think after 25 years and the huge surrounding area population that it would have had an established clientel. I know with the oil bust that the Houston population was stagnant, but still, we have plenty of peeps here. There must have been some crazy increase in operating cost, or mismanagment of funds, or lack of maintenance. The first pyramid in Moody Gardens did not operate until 1993. KimberlySayWhat
Thanks for the pictures! It was depressing but nice to see it at least still standing (via FreakyDude's pictures). Then you scroll down a little and J.A.S.O.N ruins it by posting pictures of it being demolished. Now I'm both sad and nostalgic.

Pumapayam
Sea-rama building demo'd for an RV park. That sucks! Puma, if you lived by Sea World would you go every weekend ? It's working for Moody Gardens now. I think people go, just not every weekend, but at least once or tiwce a year, especially to entertain friends and relatives who visit Houston. We don't have very many attractions that are unique here.

Pumapayam
No, I'm not joking. Sorry, I read your entry wrong at the beginning, (for those confused about the post, I changed it to make more sense, which now makes Montrose1100's seem confusing) I was thinking he was refering to a WaterWorld in it's current form (i.e. non-existant) rather than a past tense reference. My bad.

It can still be seen on Google Maps Satellite photos and they seem to be fairly up to date. Go to the south end of runway 17-35 of Scholes Field and look for the skanky green ponds. KimberlySayWhat
Ok, I think I found it. Someone posted some photos on here about a year ago that they took of Sea Arama it stands now and it was so creepy and abandoned looking. Kind of like that place on "Lost" last season, for those who watch. They ought to revive it.

Dad took me there every year for my birthday. We went there right after we ate at Gaidos. I have no pics but here are the salt and pepper shakers I bought on one of the trips. Its a little dark, sorry about the quality.
memebag
Mom: "Guess where we're going after church? Me (at 5 years old): "Where?"Mom: "We're going to Sea-Arama!"Me: "Great. What's a 'Rama'?"Mom: "No, bubba, we're not going to see a Rama, we're going to Sea-Arama!"Me: "Um, OK. So ... what's a 'Rama', anyway?"My dad laughed all the way to Galveston. Ever after we got there, I kept looking for the Rama.

KimberlySayWhat
I reckon I looked at the wrong thing on Google maps, thinking it was Sea Arama, but after looking at that picture it's clearly not. Poor old Sea Arama. Anyway, I was in Galveston the other day and was wondering where it was and if it had been torn down yet. I wonder why Galveston hasn't opened another Sea Arama/Sea World-type park.

I just watched last weeks episode...Hurley is a really big guy, height-wise, towers over John Locke & Ben. Oh, by the way, Sea-Arama has/had nice googie style architecture, semi-circle roofs. missmsry
I'm sorry, but considering the suffering and death those poor sea creatures endured, I have no fond memories of this place. Anyone remember the beluga whales imported in the late 1980s that died about 2 months later? This place was a joke and deserves to be gone.Plus, I think the same architect who designed Sea-Arama must have designed my high school, Westchester. Same stupid arches. Same stupid arches.Hmmm, obviously not a googie lover.I was curious, so I looked it up.Sea-Arama was designed by W.O. Gustafson (Architect). He also is credited with The Tidelands Inn, among other things. I can see a resemblance in the style. As for Westchester Sr. High School - Koetter, Tharp & Cowell, arch. (AIA Arch Guide). I never realized until today, while looking at the aerials, that Sea Arama was located so close to Scholes airport. k5jri radio
Sea-Arama Marineworld Park was one of the Galveston attractions I wanted to visit, but never "got around" to visiting before it closed. Years later, I made several visits to Sea-Arama Marineworld Park, near St. Augustine FL, while working as a public school teacher. This was one of several attractions in the St. Augustine area that met my employers' requirement that all student field trip destinations must have legitimate educational content.
