Architect For Prairie Style House

Recommended Posts

We are starting the process of looking for an architect and are completely overwhelmed with the number of them.

Is there a recommendation of a firm or person who can design a Prairie style house? For reference, my favorite FLW house is the Willits house and my boyfriend's favorite is the Robie house.

I've been looking for a builder who has a FLW mentality for a while now so I could start designing my own house in stead of building everyone elses. So if you find one, let me know. And when you're ready to build, let me know. ;o)

Those are very modern and far from FLW's prairie homes built in the early 1900's. There are many architects in Houston and we have found some very enthusiastic people who want to attempt to design a Prairie, but they don't understand what truly makes a Prairie.

I appreciate you taking the time to post

I'm thinking along the lines of

Jay Baker has done some "Prairie Style" homes. At least some with design aesthetics based on FLW. There was an actual firm in Houston that had guys that worked with FLW but don't know what happened to them. They had offices on Ferndale and Westheimer. Last time I drove by their offices though, it was a cosmetic surgery place.

That's the MacKie & Kamrath building - it is now the River Oaks Plastic Surgery Center.

Frederick MacKie died in 1984, and Karl Kamrath died in 1988.

You might want to check this company out as well:

They had a sign up for a spec build next to the house pictured here. The drawings showed a distinctly Prairie-styled home. I don't know if there was neighborhood opposition from the bungalow owners, or if no one showed any interest, or if the slumping real state market caused them to re-evaluate, but the sign is now gone.

They would probably welcome a chance to work with someone like you.

Thank you for the reference. We did talk with Mr. Condon and we like what he has done as well as his philosophy; but the vision we have for the home was more in line with projects that Mr. Merritt has completed.

Not gonna let me build it?

*sniffle*
