22-Story Embassy Suites at Discovery Green

Recommended Posts

Went by there today...Zero activity. What little bit of concrete they were breaking up is all they've done.

Does anyone know why they would start then stop?

Because they have yet to really even start, I'm guessing.

Only Wednesday, around midday, did they begin to move the construction trailer onto the site. Looked like half of a double-wide, IIRC. So, I'd say they're still in the process of getting equipment to the lot.

i was there two days ago and they had a green fence around it and dirt everywhere with equipment too. looks like they have only taken the old parking lot out and have the dirt so far.

I drove by it today and it is in full swing. It looks like they are working on the utilities right now, but it is happening.

Very good news, someone needs to take some photos.

Apologies, but all this has to be done via my iPhone. I would upload photos, but it is much easier to upload videos and then link to them.

I predict that those become the two most viewed videos on youtube of all time. ;)

That's the "action" shot ;-)

I wanted to get closer in the first video, but the sidewalk was closed off, with a police office guarding it. I didn't really push the issue.

I would love to be a regular contributor of downtown construction photos to haif. Now if I could just figure out how to get photos from my iphone to haif/internet, we'll be set.

How are you liking that iPhone 3GS?

Nice video upload.

Exciting things for HAIF with these instant updates.

The 3gs is fine. Other than the video, I can't tell a difference between this version and the previous version. It is still the best smart phone for web surfing. I just wish you could do simple things like upload photos.

No way will it be 360 feet tall, even with the roof/spire.

The floor count is just 19, down from the original 22. Hotels are also known for having shorter floor-to-floor heights as compared to condos and offices. I'm guessing it will come in around the 210 to 230 ft. range depending upon the final roof design.

The developer, American Liberty Hospitality, has the tower at 22 floors.

well know in a few days, what the final floor count is.....and i think 360 ft is far-fetched....

isnt the typical floor height 8-12 ft for office buildings, if not, im close anyways...

The Hilton next door is 24 floors, but it's broad.

Why do I have a feeling this is gonna have a puny feel to it? I hope I'm wrong, cuz I do like the design. It's just so short.

Your video update is awesome Random!

I always like seeing what is under the ground. All those piers make me wonder what used to be there. Anyone know? Also, in the pics and video there is a big concrete ball and a red or orange circular structure taht looks like a well or somehting. Anyone that has seen this up close know what it is?

Remains of a space ship that landed there back in the 50's. From Mars, I think. Surely you've heard about that. ;-)

LOL @ construction porn.

And I'm interested to see what the landscaping will be around the hotel. I actually like the landscaping around some of the HC buildings, and given the popularity of Discovery Green, I hope the hotel maintains a nice mix of urbanity and greenery.

I recently took a walk down Labranch from Franklin to Pease and I must say in just the last two years has this side of Downtown has really grown. I like how it's filling up over there.

I was the one who took those pictures last week when I took my family to Discovery Green and I have no idea what those objects are. I took those pictures over the construction fence, so I did not see those items until I reviewed the pictures later. The next time I go down there I will try to see if I can talk to a worker about what those objects are. I go downtown twice a month and send my pictures to the skyscraperpage forum, so be on the lookout for more info there and here. My screen name is johnme there as well.

Thanks for the shots. That update does make me laugh though, because it's a big construction site and the only sign of life is some poor guy pushing a broom on the far end.

Picture from chron.com shows a good view of the progress from the grand balcony of OPP:

Nice photo angle. I'm very excited to see the asthetics of this particular corner after the completion of the new hotel. The location already screams vibrancy.

Indeed. The atmosphere is electric.

No, wait, that's just the substation.

Shame about that...!

Went to HP for dinner tonight and swung by Discovery Tower, DG, and OPP to check out the area and saw a big ole blue crane set up for ES. It was a great feeling seeing the crane setup. I cant wait for the next surface lot nearby to have a crane.

Awesome! I'll be working overseas for a about a month and half starting next week... It's going to be awesome to come back to downtown with (hopefully) HP hoppin (lucky strike, mia bella, cork wine bar, 3 forks, etc... open!) and the DG area becoming very vibrant. Seems like it has taken HP 1 year to get going but it's going to be awesome coupled with discovery green and the surrounding developments...

have they released a real rendering of this thing yet? i have a hard believing that construction is already well underway and the only rendering we've seen is a preliminary crayola drawing.

Another hotel will bring tons more activity to the HP. Anyone who does not have a car and walk around!

Go Houston.
