22-Story Embassy Suites at Discovery Green

Recommended Posts

Michael D. Oden, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin who has studied economic development subsidies, said an important question is why private investment will not suffice if there is such a strong convention market.

I thought they had already agreed to subsidize this development.

Dallas is voting on a ban of public financing for a convention hotel next week... the anti-government intervention folks are rabid up there.

I think they always planned to subsidize a new convention center hotel, but that's not this one. That project is on hold until banking stabilizes. I think it's interesting that we just voted for subsidizing private convention hotel development last October and Dallas is to vote on banning it.

Impatience is costly and perhaps foolhardy, as Houston Pavilions should have taught us.

HP just happened to come online at the wrong time. If we were in a positive economic environment, impatience would have been a genius move.

I'm not talking about the tenants. The facility is unimpressive.

I noticed that the estimates for construction have changed from around $55M in earlier articles to $34.5M in the most recent one. Is that a reasonable figure based on declining prices related to construction or is it just wrong?

It certainly doesn't have anything to do with construction price deflation. My bet is that the costs were quoted differently, one figure reflecting only hard costs, while the others include the soft costs and/or land price.

Can anyone find out the story? I am a little panicked.

In the chron last week there was an article that there was going to be a vote in City Hall or wherever on whether to approve this hotel to get the tax incentives that presumably it needed to get started.

Does anyone know what happened with this Council meeting / vote on the proposed hotel last week?

Hopefully there was a positive outcome and this thing will break ground soon?

Rock on! I am almost surprised it happened so soon in this economy. Have they broken ground? Anybody got any photos? I was there 2 weeks ago and didn't see anything going on. I like the fact that it will have a street level cafe near the park.

Amazing!!!!! Of all things.... a hotel starting construction in an economy where tourism is on the skidz... good job for Houston and the financiers!

I'm glad that people recognize how much the hotel rooms are needed in downtown. We've got a very low hotel capacity (within the CBD) when compared to other cities of similar size.

Great news!! First One Park Place was going up... and as that finished up Hess Tower went up and now this hotel... that area is being totally transformed!!

Thought I should bring the rendering to this page. Will it still look like this?

^ I hope it still looks like that. Of course I would like something better but compared to many of the ES I've seen, this one looks decent. Plus its not completely a box.

I hope that in a few years, the entire DG area will be surrounded by high-rises..

Well there's only one block left....although it's a pretty large block.

Do we know who is doing the construction? Maybe they'll announce when the official groundbreaking is and the pouring.

Excellent news, especially in this economy.

We still need about 5,000 more rooms downtown though. Here's to hoping the La Quinta breaks ground soon too as well as the other larger convention center hotel project.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the original image of La Quinta's design have a bit of a Mediterranean theme to it? It was actually more impressive than anyone expected when the news first came out.

Of course, I might be confusing projects.

Photos from the ceremony yesterday. It was pretty cool getting to meet all of the head honchos for the project and the mayor.

Some of the guys that were spear heading this hotel. The head of the project is the guy 2nd from the left.

mmm, cheese. You see the good thing with having a nice camera is that nobody asks you any questions. I had no press passes but I had a big camera so I got instant access. No but seriously, having a nice camera really works well when getting into VIP events. I can usually just show up and just walk in pretty much anywhere. Sports events, press conferences, stuff like this and get free food. Everyone just automatically thinks I am with the Houston Chronicle or something.

The mayor and some hot reporter girl asking him questions. He was talking about how when he first moved here and he parked in this parking lot and remembers nothing but parking lots for many blocks around. He commented on how much the area has changed and how much more it will change in the future for the better. He also was talking about how this hotel will be the first full service hotel in downtown since the Four Seasons opened in the mid 80's.

Bu buy parking lot! This may be the last photo you will ever see of this parking lot. ;)

Correct me if Im wrong but I believe this is the location of the Embassy Suites Hotel. This photo is form around 1970. Its amazing how much its changed.

Great pics!

Parking just got a bit tougher for the suburban people for Toyota Center and MMP. :)

those are some really good pictures, thanks to your "big camera" getting you as close as you did :)

is it just me or is it a little odd that the only pictures really surfacing on the embassy suites are the same hand drawn rendering? wouldnt you think they would have a computer generated rendering instead at the groundbreaking?

Off topic, but is that Pennzoil Tower going up at the top left. If so, construction began in 1972 and was finished in 1976.

Your placement of Embassy Suites looks pretty accurate... over in that baron wasteland.

I still want to know some details that keep being left out.

1. Who is the Architect?

2. Who is the Builder?

Don't know who the architect is. Here is the builder, and they updated their website finally after a million years. I guess they figured they might want to put on a good face since they'll be getting some pub.

Thanks for sharing the photos photolitherland.

Did they say what the floor count was going to be. I thought there was some issues with it being 19 or 22 stories.

The link above says 22 stories with about 262 "luxury suites" and some odd amount of conference space.

pfht! thats not important right now. what is important, on the other hand, is all of the excitement and buzz this is generating.

always trying to buzz kill with this technicality stuff. give me a napkin and some steel; ill build and design this sucker myself.

On their handouts they were giving out it says 19 stories. So, they need to update their render there, since its at 22. I didnt hear anything about height but at 19 stories, that puts at around the height Discovery Tower is at right now.

check that...

I just got the fastest response ever, like 4 minutes, and this is their answer...."Keith Carlson with Mitchell Carlson Stone is the architect "

edit: found their website. I've been there before so I guess we have known that. I didn't see a rendering or even a listing of the hotel on the site.
